DISTRICT COUNCIL RECONVENES FOLLOWING AUGUST RECESS; MEETS MONDAY AND TUESDAY ON LAND-USE MATTERS

The Prince George’s County Council, sitting as the District Council on zoning matters, met on Monday, September 9th.  Monday’s meeting was the first District Council session following August Recess, and included Oral Arguments and one new zoning case.  WATCH Monday’s District Council meeting.  The District Council reconvened on Tuesday, September 10th, to consider additional land-use matters.  WATCH Tuesday’s District Council session. 


COUNTY COUNCIL SESSION RESUMES FOLLOWING AUGUST RECESS

In the first session following the August recess, the County Council met Tuesday, September 10th, to consider legislative matters, and conduct public hearings.  Among the measures enacted by the Council on Tuesday was CB-008-2019, recognizing the history, culture and accomplishments of Native Americans in Prince George’s County and across the nation, and renaming Columbus Day to Native American Day in Prince George’s County.  Council Members heard from 42 residents who provided testimony on CB-17-2019, a proposed ordinance concerning the R-A (Residential/Agricultural) Zone for the purpose of permitting townhouse and one-family detached dwelling uses in the R-A Zones of Prince George’s County under certain circumstances.   The Council delayed action on the bill.  A new date has not been scheduled.  WATCH Tuesday’s Council session for the full agenda.

“WE WILL NEVER FORGET” - COUNCIL CHAIR TODD M. TURNER ISSUES STATEMENT ON 9/11 ANNIVERSARY

Council Member Todd M. Turner issued a Council Statement on September 11, 2019, commemorating the solemn 18th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  The horrific attacks claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans, including hundreds of first responders and 24 Prince Georgians.  READ the full statement.

COUNCIL’S PLANNING, HOUSING AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE RECEIVES UPDATE ON SHORT-TERM RENTALS

The Council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) committee, chaired by Council Member Dannielle Glaros, met on Wednesday, September 11th to consider CB-038-2019, an Act Concerning Fair Housing for the purpose of establishing Prince George’s County’s Policy of ensuring equal opportunity and eliminating discrimination in all housing accommodations.   PHED committee members also received a briefing from Department of Permitting, Inspections and Enforcement (DPIE) Director Melinda Bolling and DPIE staff regarding short-term rentals.  Last year, the Council adopted CB-10-2018 and CB-11-2018, companion legislation addressing short-term rentals, which will become effective on October 1, 2019. These measures establish permitting and licensing requirements, fees, and standards for short-term rentals, and limit short-term rentals to a homeowner’s primary residence.

COUNCIL’S TRANSPORTATION, INFRASTRUCTURE, ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT COMMITTEE MEETS

The Council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment (TIEE) committee, chaired by Council Member Deni Taveras, met on Thursday, September 12th, to review the Executive appointment of Sandra L. Thompson to the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.   TIEE committee members approved moving the appointment forward 4-0.   The committee also considered CR-070-2019, A Resolution concerning the preservation of agricultural land, and CR-064-2019, a Resolution updating the County’s 10-Year Water and Sewer Plan, as required by law.

COUNCIL’S GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS AND FISCAL POLICY REVIEWS LEGISLATION AND APPOINTMENTS

The Council’s Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GOFP) committee, chaired by Council Member Derrick Leon Davis, met Thursday afternoon to review legislation.   GOFP committee members also considered the Executive appointments of several individuals to the Prince George's County Human Relations Commission, the County's civil and human rights education and enforcement agency.  For more information about this agency, call the office at 301-883-6170.  WATCH Thursday’s GOFP meeting.


Census

Every 10 years, a complete count of every person in the United States helps identify and allocate those funds. For each person in Prince George’s County who fails to be counted, the County loses federal funding for your community.  Make sure you get important Census 2020 information when you attend this weekend’s Hispanic Festival. 

The event is scheduled for
Sunday, September 15th from Noon to 6 p.m.
at Lane Manor Park, 7601 West Park Drive, in Adelphi. 

Also, please join District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros on Saturday, September 21, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to learn more about Census 2020 during the third Census Workshop.

#FathersStandUp – COUNTY FATHERS JOIN AT-LARGE COUNCIL MEMBER MEL FRANKLIN TO SIGN THE 2019-2020 BACK TO SCHOOL FATHERHOOD ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITY PLEDGE

As the 2019-2020 school year approached, At-Large Council Member Mel Franklin reached out to Prince George's County fathers and father-figures to join the #FathersStandUp movement, and set an example for the nation by signing the Back to School Fatherhood Academic Responsibility Pledge. The pledge commits dads and father-figures to walk children into school on the first day of school and be an active, positive influence on school performance throughout the school year.

COUNCIL MEMBER DENI TAVERAS WASHINGTON POST LETTER DISCUSSES COUNCIL INITIATIVE SUPPORTING IMMIGRANTS

The Prince George’s County Immigrant Services and Language Access (ISLA) initiative, established by the County Council as part of the approved FY 2018 County Budget, provides free legal services to eligible County residents who have been detained and are facing deportation.  Prince George’s County was the first Maryland County to support the ISLA program since 2016.  In a Washington Post Letter to the Editor published on August 28th, Council Member Deni Taveras responded to a Washington Post editorial on ISLA.  READ Council Member Taveras’ op-ed.
