Woof Wednesdays

Big Dogs Need Homes Too!

Celebrate Woof Wednesdays by giving a fur-ever home to a large loveable dog. Think of all the big kisses and hugs you will receive throughout the years if you adopt a big dog - it will be priceless.

To help bring awareness and to make sure large dogs find loving homes too, ASD is offering a special discount every Wednesday. Every large dog over 50 pounds is just a $50 adoption fee.

For more information, view our adoptable dogs at www.princegeorgespets4us.com or call 301-780-7200 to begin the adoption process.

DoE Celebrates Black History Month

Dr. Augustus Lushington First African American Veterinarian

Dr. Lushington

As we celebrate Black History Month, we recognize the first African American to earn a Veterinary Medicine Degree (VMD), Dr. Augustus Nathaniel Lushington, who was born in Trinidad in 1869. Dr. Lushington earned a VMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1897. Before that, he also earned an agricultural degree from Cornell University.

Following graduation, he practiced for two years in Philadelphia and worked as an instructor in Veterinary Sanitation. In addition, he taught Hygiene at Bell Mead Industrial and Agricultural College at Rockcastle, WVA.

For much of his career, Dr. Lushington set up his veterinary practice in Lynchburg, VA, working mostly with large animals including cows, horses, and other livestock. He experienced unfair treatment and non-payment from white farmers that forced him to take other jobs, including a meat inspector and a probation officer, to pay his bills. After years of hard work and overcoming obstacles, he finally earned a reputation as a superior practitioner in the community. For more information about Dr. Lushington, visit bit.ly/UPenVetDrLushington.

Adopt or Foster A Senior Pet Today

Did You Know?

Senior dogs, ages seven (7) and over, are available for adoption from our shelter with reduced fees, year-round! Prince George's County residents only pay the $10 County license fee, regardless if they are altered or not (FREE for out-of-county residents).

Our senior dogs make the best pets because they still have lots of love to give. Typically, older dogs are usually house-trained, require less attention, and have lower energy then puppies - meaning less destructive chewing behaviors.

Check out the Animal Foundation 10 top reasons to adopt a senior pet - you will not be disappointed.

Help us with our shelters senior population! The benefits to housing a senior:

Low to mid-level energy

Usually housetrained or have some training

Past the destructive/puppy stage

Have lots of love to give!

Our ASD staff are looking for temporary fosters for our shelters most susceptible animals - our senior pets! If you cannot commit to adopting yet, please consider fostering!

To learn more about our foster program, please email fosterPGCpets@co.pg.md.us

Will You Be Our Valentine?

Sister Kittens Will Steal Your Heart

We have two kitten sisters - Supernova (A540547) and Aurora (A540548) - who were sent into foster as they were too timid and “spicy” to be adopted. Their foster parent has done a wonderful job socializing them. This is one of the many reasons foster parents are important to the shelter!

If you would like to apply to be an approved foster, please email fosterpgcpets@co.pg.md.us

Supernova and Aurora

Meet Supernova and Aurora

We would be happiest being adopted and staying together!

I am Supernova (A540547), a black and white female "tuxedo" kitten with green eyes, white cheeks, white paws, and a white belly. I am about six months old and love to run and play with my sister, Aurora, and another cat in our foster home.

I am Aurora (A540548), just like my sister, I am a black and white female "tuxedo" kitten with green eyes, a white nose, white paws, and a white belly. I am also about six months old and an energetic kitty, loving to play with my sister, another cat in our foster home, and my human foster mom.

We would love to be adopted together or placed in a home with another friendly cat. Some of our favorite toys are jingly balls, string, and a cat tunnel. We like pets along our back but aren't big fans of being held... yet. We can be a little shy and skittish at first but feed us a little wet food on a spoon a few times a day or dangle some fun string and sneak in some pets at the same time, and we'll become quick friends with you. We're also litter box superstars who are ready to join your family!

Both Supernova (A540547) and Aurora (A540548) are available for adoption by calling 301-780-7200 or emailing adoptpgcpets@co.pg.md.us.

Meet Miss Peaches

Miss Peaches had three kittens under our shed. Once they were weaned, we trapped the kittens and got them inside our home. Then we trapped Mom and got her fixed. She will not come inside but hangs around for food and company. After four years, she decided that getting a human touch was a good thing after all.

You can find a new best friend like Miss Peaches! Check out the available pets and for more information on how to adopt or foster, visit www.princegeorgespets4us.com.

Donate Kuranda Beds,
Blankets, Toys and Towels

Help our shelter pets have the comforts of home by donating Kuranda beds, gently used bedding (no pillows) and toys for their merriment (cat toys, stuffed animals, Kongs, Nylabones). Deliver or drop off items at the shelter during operating hours:

 Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m.– 4 p.m.

As part of enrichment programs, the shelter is also looking for newspaper, toilet paper rolls, and gently used muffin pans. These items help us provide our shelter babies with clean and comfortable spaces. For recommendations on donations visit enrichment items.

In addition, ASD is strongly encouraging donations of Kuranda beds of all sizes for our doggie friends. There are lots of benefits for pets sleeping on Kuranda Beds, including:

  • Kuranda Beds are the superior choice in shelters and rescues due to their durability and added protection of a 1-Year Chew Proof Warranty.
  • Shelters prefer Kuranda beds since they are easy to clean and sanitize, minimizing the spread of infectious disease.
  • The elevated sleep surface helps regulate body temperature, both in warmer and cooler months.
  • The orthopedic design alleviates pressure points on joints.
  • Quality sleep reduces stress which keeps animals healthy and feeling good while they await their forever homes.

Check out shelterbeds.org/donate/22654 for more information on how to donate.
