ROCKVILLE, Md., July 22, 2020—Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice, chair of the Montgomery County Council’s Education and Culture Committee, was selected by the National Association of Counties (NACo) to serve as vice chair of the Human Services and Education Steering Committee at NACo’s 85th Annual Business Meeting on July 20. NACo’s Annual Business Meeting was held virtually due to the coronavirus pandemic with more than 1,000 county leaders and partners from across the country participating. NACo serves nearly 40,000 county elected officials and strengthens counties through the promotion of exemplary county policies and advocacy on federal policies.

Councilmember Rice was appointed to the NACo Board of Directors in 2019. As vice chair of the Human Services and Education Steering Committee, Councilmember Rice will focus on all matters pertaining to children’s issues, foster care, public assistance and income supports, services for senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, immigration policy, social services and elementary, secondary and post-secondary education. The committee has recently advocated for increased food assistance and proposed actions to address the child-care crisis in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I look forward to serving in this national role that focuses on issues in which I have been invested for years,” said Councilmember Rice. “I will be relying on my experience chairing education committees at both the county and state levels as well as chairing the early childhood education subcommittee for the Maryland Commission on Innovation and Excellence in Education. There is much work to be done and by working at this level with my counterparts from across this great nation, I am certain that we can generate creative policy solutions to the issues we are facing today.”

Councilmember Rice was elected in 2010 to the Montgomery County Council, after previously having served in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2006 until 2010, where he was on the legislative body’s Ways and Means Committee. He chairs the Council’s Education and Culture Committee and also serves on its Health and Human Services Committee. In addition, Councilmember Rice serves as the Council’s representative to the Maryland Association of Counties (MACo) in Annapolis and chairs MACo’s Education sub-committee. Councilmember Rice is the past chair and current member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) Chesapeake Bay and Water Resources Policy Committee and is the chair of their Agricultural Task Force.
