ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 29, 2018—Councilmember Sidney Katz will present a proclamation on behalf of the Montgomery County Council and County Executive Isiah Leggett recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at 10 a.m. at tomorrow’s Council meeting. He will be joined for the proclamation by Debbie Feinstein, Chief of the Special Victims Division of the State’s Attorney’s Office and Tom Manion, Executive Director of the Family Justice Center.

One in three women and one in four men have been the victim of physical violence by at intimate partner at some point in their lives. One in 10 high school students in Maryland report experiencing violence in a relationship; and one in 15 children are exposed to domestic violence each year in the United States.

“Domestic violence is totally unacceptable, and we take it extremely seriously in Montgomery County,” said Councilmember Katz. “It is a crime that leaves lasting physical and psychological scars, traumatizes children and undermines our communities. It is my hope that this proclamation will help raise awareness about the issue and about the excellent services offered by the Family Justice Center and other County organizations and nonprofits to victims of domestic abuse. We want victims to feel comfortable speaking out and we want them to find justice, safety and well-being.”

Councilmember Katz also serves as chair of the Montgomery County Domestic Violence Coordinating Council, which offers education and resources for community members, including Choose Respect Montgomery, a teen dating violence prevention initiative.

The Family Justice Center offers free confidential services to women, men and children impacted by domestic violence.
