DNR to Acquire Property to Establish First State Park in Wicomico County
The Maryland Board of Public Works in February approved the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) moving forward with the purchase of the 445-acre Graham property, which will become the first Maryland State Park in Wicomico County. The property had previously been conserved by an easement donated to MET by its landowner Donald Graham in 2015.
MET played a role in setting up the first meeting between Mr. Graham and other DNR staff in 2022 to explore the possibility of this property becoming a State Park. We are thrilled that this wonderful property is being purchased for that purpose and will eventually be open to the public! Read more.

Article Update: New Easement Protects 13.5 Acres in Howard County
Our February article, New Easement Protects 13.5 Acres in Howard County, should have mentioned that the easement in Elkridge is jointly held with the nonprofit Rockburn Land Trust (RLT). In addition to playing a crucial role in connecting us to the landowners who donated the easement, RLT will also conduct annual easement monitoring visits of the property, and will be the first point of contact to respond to any easement inquiries from the landowners. MET jointly holds eight easements with RLT protecting more than 80 acres in Elkridge. We are grateful for our partnership and apologize for the oversight.

Announcing The Ellen Harvey Kelly Award for Advocacy
The St. George’s Garden Club is pleased to announce that a prestigious new medal award for advocacy honoring the late Baltimore native Ellen Harvey Kelly has been endowed in her memory by family, admirers and garden club members, and will be awarded by the Garden Club of America (GCA). “Ellie” Kelly, who died in November 2023 at the age of 94, has been recognized and awarded by many prominent national organizations for her valuable work on conservation and environmental issues of importance.
Ellie served as a trustee for Maryland Environmental Trust for nearly twenty years starting in 1982. Through her work with Scenic America and the GCA, Ellie was very influential in the formation of the Keep Maryland Beautiful program, which became a program of MET at its founding by the state legislature in 1967.
For over sixty years she was a member of St. George’s Garden Club of Baltimore, one of two hundred garden clubs with over 18,000 total members that make up the GCA, a national non-profit organization. The “Ellen Harvey Kelly Medal” will be awarded in recognition of outstanding advocacy supporting the purposes of the Garden Club of America: “stimulating the knowledge and love of gardening, supporting conservation, and working to protect the quality of the environment through educational programs, and civic improvement.” Read more.

Five Maryland Watersheds Selected for Whole Watershed Act Grant Funding To Support Environmental Restoration and Economic Development
Maryland has selected the five watersheds in the state that will receive initial state grant funding as part of the Whole Watershed Act. These watershed-scale restoration efforts will contribute to both short-term and lasting economic benefits in the state of Maryland.
Maryland’s Whole Watershed Act, passed by the Maryland General Assembly in 2024, establishes a collaborative and science-based approach to watershed restoration. The act created a five-year program to target five Maryland watersheds for water quality improvements that best represent the state’s diverse land uses, geographies, and environmental challenges. A watershed is a land area that channels rainfall and snowmelt to creeks, streams, and rivers, and eventually to outflow points such as the Chesapeake Bay or Atlantic Ocean. Read more.
