New Easement Protects 13.5 Acres in Howard County
Maryland Environmental Trust is pleased to announce a newly established conservation easement near Ellicott City in Howard County. The property further enhances land conservation within Patapsco Valley State Park by protecting a 13.5-acre private inholding among 1,200 acres of woodlands within the park. The property and adjoining areas contain habitat the Department of Natural Resources considers "highly significant for biodiversity and conservation," specifically for forest dwelling bird species. The property also protects the clearly visible remains of a historic raceway, once used to transport water for industry and timber harvest. Conservation of this area also protects the viewshed of the Lawyers Hill Historic District, which is a nationally recognized historic area containing homes of varying architectural styles.
Interested in Conserving Your Land?
As Marylanders, we know how lucky we are to call this state home. From the forested mountains of Garrett County to the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland has natural areas and scenic beauty rivaled by few states in the nation. You can play an important role in protecting Maryland's lands by agreeing to protect your land with a conservation easement.
By protecting your land with a conservation easement, you are committing to conserving scenic vistas and wildlife habitat, ensuring the future viability of farming and forestry, and conserving the rural character and natural beauty of communities all across Maryland. You can accomplish all of this without giving up ownership of the land you love. Visit MET’s FAQs page for answers to commonly asked questions about conservation easements, or information about the tax benefits that may be available to landowners who donate easements to MET.

ESLC Conserves Camp Grove Point as Addition to Grove Farm WMA
In 2022, the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay (GSCB) Council made the difficult decision to sell Camp Grove Point. GSCB approached Eastern Shore Land Conservancy (ESLC) for help, wanting to sell to someone who would preserve the entire camp.
ESLC formally purchased the camp last month and will assist DNR in its restoration of the property to a more natural state. Ultimately, ESLC will transfer the camp to DNR as an addition to Grove Farm Wildlife Management Area. Grove Farm is managed by the Wildlife and Heritage Service, whose mission is to “conserve and enhance diverse wildlife populations and associated habitats while providing for public enjoyment of the state’s wildlife resources through hunting and other wildlife-dependent recreation.” Read more.
