Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve had a great week and are gearing up for the weekend. It looks like it will be a beautiful one to catch the state fair if you haven’t already.

While you can find more information about yesterday's Metro Council meeting in the recap below, I did want to highlight one piece of legislation that I think is particularly important. We approved an ordinance restricting the density of package liquor stores, limiting them to one per thousand feet and regulating their proximity to things like schools, parks, and daycares. 

I do think it’s important that government allows the private market to operate without too much interference. We do play a role, however, in protecting communities and ensuring land use is appropriate. I think a lot of people would agree that too many of these establishments in close proximity can be destabilizing to a community. I should add that the approach we took is not new. We passed similar restrictions several years ago related to vape shops, for example. 

This is not a perfect piece of legislation. I think there are some practical concerns with its implementation, so we'll be monitoring it closely for any unintended consequences. It’s worth noting as well that this law won’t impact any existing businesses. Only newly proposed establishments will need to abide by these density restrictions. Overall, I think this effort was necessary as we seek to protect the quality of life, overall safety, and property value for all our residents. 

In other news, this is the last weekend for the Kentucky State Fair. It's a great opportunity to check out the barns, catch a show, attend a concert, sample all kinds of food, and generally be reminded of the things that make our commonwealth great.

'Coffee With Your Councilman' - Thursday, September 17

My next 'Coffee With Your Councilman' will be Thursday, September 17 at 9 a.m. at Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS, 9514 Featherbell Boulevard. I'll share the latest news from City Hall and answer any questions or concerns attendees have. If you haven't been able to join one of my coffee meetings before, I hope you'll give it a try. Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These typically include requests for changes in zoning, conditional use permits, variances, waivers, and more. There is one case in this week's report regarding property in District 17, a conditional use permit to allow off-street parking at 12606 St. Clair Drive. There are also a couple of proposals just outside our district listed in the report. One involves a waiver needed for a proposed LED sign at 10901 Ballardsville Road. The other is a landscape plan for property located at 209 N. English Station Road. Please let me know if you have comments or questions about any of these cases.

Public Hearing - 10305 Ballardsville Road

The Development Review Committee, a committee of the Planning Commission, will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, September 2 to review a proposal for a bank to be constructed at 10305 Ballardsville Road. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until all cases on the agenda are heard. BMX Nationals Next Weekend

I wanted to let everyone know that BMX Nationals will take place next weekend (September 4-6) at E. P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park. This is a very large event with close to 18,000 people expected over those three days. If you're in the area during that time, please know that getting to your destination could take a bit longer than usual.
  

WorldFest - Labor Day Weekend

WorldFest, Louisville's premier international festival, returns Labor Day weekend to celebrate the many different cultures in our community. Attendees can expect, among other things:

  • Three entertainment stages showcasing performers all weekend long
  • Nearly 150 vendors featuring arts, merchandise, food, and beverages
  • A children’s area to help them learn about other cultures, customs, crafts, etc.
  • A naturalization ceremony recognizing more than 100 new Americans
