Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you're having a great summer (or is it fall given these cooler temperatures?!). Though hard to believe, it's almost back-to-school time already. I wish you luck finding all the things on your child's list of school supplies!

This week marked the resumption of committee meetings after our three week break following passage of the budget. It was a relatively quiet week with the most notable legislation being an ordinance related to security requirements for businesses operating late at night. Basically, if a business has multiple incidents at their location (nuisance violations, criminal activity, etc.) it will be required to have security on site to continue to operate during those late hours. This isn't much of an issue in our area, but some parts of town have businesses with repeated issues. It's important to note that this doesn't apply to every business (e.g. a gas station operating without incident doesn't suddenly have to hire an armed security officer) - only those with repeated issues. I'm interested to see this new law in action.

Prior to the break, as I mentioned earlier, we passed the FY27 budget. Now, we look forward to its implementation over the coming months which will mean new park amenities, paving and sidewalk projects, and more across the district. We are working on some other improvements related to parks and neighborhoods, and I'll have more information to share on those in the coming months.

Since I mentioned the start of school earlier, I thought I'd give you an update on the project I proposed earlier this year related to lighting at school bus stops. I spoke to Deputy Mayor George earlier this week and am happy to report we're making tremendous progress. All the stops that need attention have been identified, we've got a plan for implementation, and we've got some money set aside that we can hopefully use to begin installing street lights where necessary. I'm really excited about this work that will make areas all across our city safer, particularly for children as they wait for the bus. 

I hope you get to enjoy the last few weeks of summer break whether it be through time at the lake, taking a vacation, or attending a local festival. On that last front, I want to remind everyone about Berrytown Day on Saturday, August 1 from 2-8 p.m. at Berrytown Park. It's a great way to check out one of our metro parks, meet some District 17 neighbors, and just enjoy the outdoors.
