Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I think there may be a basketball tournament or two going on, so maybe we’ll start there. First, congratulations to the UofL men on their win yesterday. Here’s hoping they continue to make more than 50% of their threes moving forward. That seems like a recipe for success! The UofL women tip off tomorrow, so hopefully this time next week we’ll be talking about their Sweet 16 matchup. Finally, the Cats are playing this afternoon, so good luck to them today and moving forward as well.

For this week’s comments, I thought I’d focus on the 8th Division’s first quarterly community meeting held Wednesday evening at the Berrytown Recreation Center. I really appreciate Major Tatum getting these meetings scheduled. We already ask a lot of our officers, so it’s no small thing to add something else to their calendar. Of course, community engagement and transparency are an important part of building trust between our police and those they serve, so I’m very happy to see these become a regular occurrence.

Major Tatum was joined by about a dozen others from the 8th Division (Lieutenants, Division Resource Officers, etc.) as well as representatives from the 8th Division Advisory Board. After some brief introductions, the major offered to take questions from those in attendance. The concerns raised covered a wide variety of topics: motorcycle racing, on-street parking, patrol deployment, unsafe driving near school buses, panhandling, attempted theft, speeding, and more.

It's worth mentioning here the importance of reporting any suspicious or dangerous activity you see. One of the slides shared Wednesday showed that the 8th Division had 1,968 calls for service from March 1 through March 16 - almost 2,000 calls in half a month! It’s understandable to see that number and think, ‘I don’t want to bother them with that’ or ‘Somebody else probably called it in anyway.’ Major Tatum and her staff made the point, though, that it can be difficult for them to place resources where they’re needed without this sort of information. In case you need it, the number to call for non-emergencies is 574-7111.

Another point of focus was the 8th Division’s request for your help. I already mentioned one way – report suspicious activity. What else can you do? It probably comes as no surprise that locking your doors and removing valuables from vehicles came up! Another suggestion was to get to know your neighbors - build relationships with people on your street, watch out for each other, exchange contact info, etc. You can also participate in LMPD community programs like Neighborhood Watch, Connect Louisville (registering your security camera), or the Citizens Police Academy. Officers in the 8th Division do a great job keeping us safe, but we all play a role in that effort.

If you weren't able to make the meeting and have concerns you wanted to raise or questions about what was shared, please let me know. Their next meeting will be June 24 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Anchorage Middletown Fire Station, 9514 Featherbell Boulevard. I hope to see you there. I think you’ll find it worth your time.

As always, I hope you have a great weekend. If there is anything my office can do to assist you, please let us know.

PVA Reassessments and Your Right To Appeal

PVA

The Jefferson County PVA will mail property assessments on April 24. The 2026 reassessment covers MLS areas 8 and 9 which stretch basically from the Ohio River to just south of I-64 and from I-264 east to the Oldham County line. This will include almost 12,000 parcels in Metro Council District 17. If your property value changes, a full-color assessment notice on a large postcard that includes a photo of the property will be mailed to you.

If you believe the assessed value is incorrect, the PVA wants you to know that you have a right to appeal. To learn more about the process of assessment and appeal, please consider attending (either in person or virtually) one of the three community meetings mentioned above. Click here for more information.

Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These typically include requests for changes in zoning, waivers, variances, district development plans, and more. There are two cases in this week's report involving property in our district. One is a landscape plan for a new Chick-fil-A restaurant at 10003 Ballardsville Road (in front of Publix). The other is a sign permit request related to a 7 Brew Coffee located at 10113 Brownsboro Road.

Though a quarter of a mile outside our district, the report also includes a district development plan to construct a commercial and retail development at 207 N. English Station Road. If you have questions about any of these cases, please don't hesitate to call my office.

Pop-Up Drop-Off - Saturday, April 4

pop up drop off

The next Pop-Up Drop-Off will be Saturday, April 4 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at UofL Shelby Campus, 440 N. Whittington Parkway. These events provide Jefferson County residents with a convenient, free way to recycle or properly dispose of items around the house. Accepted items include electronics, certain appliances, large household items like rolled carpet and mattresses, and much more. Additional services include prescription medication collection, on-site document shredding, and gently used shoe donations to WaterStep. For more information on these events, click here. There won't be another of these events this close to our area until November, so if you're thinking of taking advantage of the opportunity to get rid of some things, this might be the one to attend!

Paving in District 17

Weather permitting, milling and/or paving work is scheduled to begin next week on Craigs Creek Drive (from Keene Road to Keene Road) and Cooper Ridge Court (from Craigs Creek Drive to the end) in our district. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns during this work.

Lawn Care for Cleaner Air

Lawn Care

Making the switch from gasoline-powered lawn equipment to more air-friendly electric equipment can make a difference in the air we breathe. Louisville Metro Government is making that switch easier with cash rebates on electric mowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers, as well as human-powered reel mowers. You can save even more by trading in your old, gas-powered equipment. For more details, visit the Air Pollution Control District program page here.
