Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a good week and are enjoying the change in weather. It's nice to finally see grass again!

Yesterday, the mayor presented his annual 'State of the City' address. It's always interesting to hear the things highlighted as wins for our city and the plans for the coming year. The topic he probably spent the most time talking about was the improvements to our park system over the last couple of years. This is something I'm particularly proud of as well.

Across the city, our parks are being better maintained as we've made significant progress on deferred maintenance projects after years of neglect. We've opened new parks and installed new and better playground equipment and amenities all across the city. In District 17, this has meant new playground equipment, a refurbished basketball court, an extended walking track, and new bleachers for Berrytown Park. It has also meant new playground equipment, a rock climbing feature, and other improvements at Hounz Lane Park. You can read a little more on that below. (While I'm on the subject of Hounz Lane Park, I want to make a very early plug for this year's Shakespeare in the Parks performance of The Tempest which will be the Sunday after Derby. We'll keep our fingers crossed that the weather cooperates, but for my money there's no better place to watch the talented performers of Kentucky Shakespeare than down by the stream that runs through the more passive part of the park.) Though not parks we maintain, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention E. P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park and The Parklands. We truly have a plethora of park options in our area.

Why is investing in parks so important? First of all, who doesn't love a good park!? Whether it's having a picnic, playing pickleball, going for a hike, or reading a book, it just feels great to be outdoors. Just as important, however, is the research that shows well-maintained, well-appointed parks are a critical piece in attracting new talent to our area, enhancing the quality of life for our residents, and improving public safety. After all, kids that have productive things to do are much less likely to get in trouble. So, we'll continue to invest in not only our parks, but in our libraries, community centers, and other similar places all across the city.

I hope you have a great weekend. Please don't hesitate to reach out if my office can be of assistance.

Hounz Lane Park Improvements

ribbon cutting Hounz Lane Park

The recent additions to Hounz Lane Park include new swings, an explorer dome, playground equipment for younger kids, water fountains, and more.

Earlier this week, I was joined by Mayor Greenberg and Louisville Parks & Recreation for a ribbon cutting celebrating the recent improvements to Hounz Lane Park. As you may recall, these include several new pieces of playground equipment, water fountains, and benches. You can see MetroTV's coverage of the event here. It looks like we'll have temperatures in the 60s very soon, which sounds like a great opportunity to check things out. I hope you'll let me know what you think!

February 12 Metro Council Meeting

The Louisville Metro Council held its regularly scheduled meeting last night. Among other things, we approved a contract to Seven Counties Services, Inc. regarding deflection services, considered several land use/planning requests, and expanded funding eligibility related to our Parks Police. Click here and choose the 'Metro Council Meetings' option to see the complete agenda or for more information about a particular item.

LMPD's 2026 Crime Reduction Strategic Plan

The Louisville Metro Police Department recently shared with the Metro Council its 2026 Crime Reduction Strategic Plan. The link explains the overall goals of the plan, shares various trends, details a new three-front approach to reducing crime, gives examples of some short-term focused crime details, and more. As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These typically include requests for changes in zoning, conditional use permits, variances, landscape plans, and more. There is one case in this week's report involving property in District 17, a Category 2B development plan for a 5,000 square foot addition at the Kentucky Truck Plant on Chamberlain Lane. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments about that or any other case in the report.

Pothole Repair

pothole repair

Recent winter weather, particularly the repeated freezing and thawing cycles, has taken a toll on many of our roads. Since the start of the year, the Louisville Metro Department of Transportation has filled more than 2,500 potholes. Crews continue to work every day (and overnight) to address these problems as quickly as possible. Of course, you play an important role as well in getting these treated in a timely manner. If you see a pothole, please call 574-5000 or fill out the online form here. Remember to be as specific as possible about the location, including nearby intersections or landmarks if you can. Thank you for your help!

FY27 Budget Comment Form

While we are still a couple of months away from Mayor Greenberg presenting his budget proposal to the Louisville Metro Council, budget season will be here before we know it. With that in mind, I have added a comment form to the District 17 website. I'd love to hear your thoughts on our FY27 budget, whether they are general in nature or focused on a specific issue or department. I hope you'll take some time to comment and help guide our work in the coming months.

External Agency Fund Grant Applications

I wanted to send a reminder to our local nonprofit community that the deadline to apply for FY27 External Agency Fund (EAF) grants is Tuesday, February 24 at 5 p.m. EAF grants support local organizations that deliver essential services and programs in the areas of social services, youth development, and arts and culture.
