kNOw Waste: Proper Disposal of Fats, Oil, and Grease

Fats Oil Grease

Whether you’re pan frying the morning bacon or deep frying the holiday bird, you always have leftover fat, oil or grease. The slippery mess should never be poured into a sink, toilet or storm drain where it can lead to plumbing or sewer problems and clog local waterways.

Fat and grease left over from routine pan frying can be disposed of with other residential garbage if handled properly. Just pour the grease into a sealable container, let it cool, and place it in the trash. That keeps it out of local waterways and sewers.

Louisville’s staffed recycling locations accept household cooking oil left over from deep frying. It’s free and easy for residents of Louisville and Jefferson County. Residents should first let the oil cool, then strain out food particles and pour the oil into a container that has a lid. Take it to the nearest staffed recycling location. The oil is recycled for use in biodiesel fuel. To find a drop-off location near you, go to Louisvilleky.gov/RecycleMap.

Adoptable Pets of the Week

Seth

Our cat of the week is Seth

We love an orange cat!!!!

This is Seth- not to be confused for Seth Meyers but equally as charming! Seth came to us sick but now he's feeling MUCH better!

Seth is around 8yrs old. He loves stinky treats and prefers a treat over humans.. But he is learning how to tolerate humans and is looking for his own. Seth is FIV+ & he can live in a home with non-FIV cats as the transmission rate is very low. Always consult your veterinarian.

Buster

Our dog of the week is Buster

Meet Buster, the one year old pup who's seen it all!  He's a true character with a story to tell!

Buster is a total sweetheart. Buster is a breeze on leash and practically pulls you to his favorite pee spot (efficient!).

He's dog friendly, loves his toys, knows "sit," and wags his tail at everyone he sees.

His adoption fee is covered by Friends of Metro Animal Services.

Animal House - 3516 Newburg Road, Louisville
Open daily 12–6pm

LIHEAP is Open Through December 12th or Until Funds Are Expended

LIHEAP

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Fall Subsidy enrollment is available through Kentucky’s Community Action Network for eligible Kentucky households.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis through December 12, 2025, or until designated funds have been expended.

LIHEAP Fall Subsidy provides households with a one-time benefit depending on housing category, fuel type used for heating, and income level. The benefit can be applied towards home heating cost for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil.

Benefits are paid directly to the household's energy vendor. Prior LIHEAP assistance does not impact a household’s eligibility. Households must meet eligibility requirements, including income eligibility of up to and including 150% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

How to Apply

The toll-free automated appointment system is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week to schedule an in-person appointment at one of seven locations. The automated scheduler will provide details about these locations as well as eligibility and required documentation.

Jefferson County residents meeting eligibility can call the automated scheduler at 502-991-8391 or learn more and apply at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.
