Friday Thoughts

I'd like to focus my comments today on the terrible tragedy our city experienced on Tuesday. The horrific images of the plane crash are difficult to process. The tragic loss of those in the plane and on the ground will create a void in the lives of their loved ones who will need all the love and support our community can offer moving forward. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. You might also consider the Team Kentucky Emergency Relief Fund as a way to help if you're so inclined.

I'm certain the pilots did everything in their power to avoid a larger catastrophe and I am grateful for what was no doubt heroic efforts to avoid even more loss of life. I also want to recognize every first responder who helped keep this incident from getting worse. It is because of the work of Okolona Fire, Louisville Fire, our own Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS, and every other suburban and surrounding county fire district that the incident was not worse. Their efforts surely helped save lives and property. Additionally, the response by EMS, EMA, and police agencies across our area helped get those injured to hospitals for life-saving care and keep others out of danger.

In short, while we have much to mourn, we also have much to be thankful for. Please join me in thanking the men and women of these agencies for their work on Tuesday - and every other day - to keep us and our loved ones safe.

Along those lines, Veterans Day will be observed this coming Tuesday as we remember our veterans for their willingness to serve and sacrifice for each of us. If you're looking for a tangible way to honor them, the 2025 Kentucky Veterans Parade will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the NuLu area. Seating will be available around the intersection of E. Market and S. Clay Streets. Other ideas are to visit the VA Hospital or ask a veteran about his or her service.

I hope you have a safe and happy weekend. As always, please let me know if we can be of service.

LENSAlert and Smart911

I want to remind everyone of two resources metro government has to help keep residents informed and safe in the event of an emergency. LENSAlert, a regional emergency notification system, is a great way to get important messages and alerts from Louisville Metro Emergency Services. In addition, residents can create a safety profile for themselves and other members of their household through Smart911. Information provided (medical history, allergies to medication, number of people in the home, even a picture of the family dog, etc.) helps first responders get to the right location with the right information. Click here to sign up for either service or for more information.

Property Tax Scam

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) is warning the public about an active scam this tax season. Scammers are sending text messages instructing recipients to click a link to pay their 'property tax bill.' This is a scam. The JCSO will never call, text, or message through social media to request or collect payment of any kind. If you receive one of these messages:

  • do not click any link
  • do not respond with any personal information
  • delete the message immediately

Please contact the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office with any questions by calling 574-5471 or visiting the website here.
