Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a great week. On Tuesday, I sat down with Major Tatum of LMPD's 8th Division to discuss crime in our area and how I (and you) can support our officers in the difficult work they do. I thought today I'd share parts of that conversation.

First, the good news. Overall, crime numbers are down in our division and this is during a time when we're seeing increased reporting of incidents. It's worth noting that the most reported crime in our division is shoplifting - which makes sense given our area's concentration of big-box retail. Of the remaining crimes, we have seen dramatic improvements lately in car thefts and burglaries. The major believes this can be attributed in some degree to residents locking their cars, being cautious about where they leave garage door openers, etc. Your vigilance is paying off, so I hope you'll continue those practices. One item of note, though - we still had 11 firearms stolen from vehicles last month. If you keep a gun in your car, please remember to bring it inside for the evening.

The not-so-good news is we have seen a rise lately in car break-ins. And, more disturbingly, there are some that have gone beyond the traditional checking for unlocked cars and are actively breaking car windows. LMPD has been working to catch and identify these groups (and they believe there are multiple groups) and have had some limited success. Unfortunately, as they increase enforcement in some areas, the problem simply shifts to another area. Recently, it has shifted to ours.

To address this issue, LMPD has stepped up evening patrols. This began last week and led to a noticeable reduction in car break-ins. That said, even one is too many. To that end, the major will continue these patrols, and I am asking senior staff at LMPD to authorize additional overtime so that we have more officers on patrol, particularly in the overnight hours. In addition, I've had conversations with LMPD about the possible placement of Flock cameras in/near some HOAs and suburban cities in our district.

We'll continue working with LMPD to make sure Major Tatum and the officers in the 8th Division have the resources they need. And, again, thank you for doing your part. It does make a difference!

I hope you have a great weekend whether you're watching football, catching your favorite act at Bourbon & Beyond, or anything in between. If my office can be of any service, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These can include requests for changes in zoning, conditional use permits, waivers, landscape plans, and more. There are three cases in this week's report involving property in District 17:

  • A landscape plan for a parking lot expansion at 2813 North Hurstbourne Parkway
  • A minor plat to shift a property line at 804 N. English Station Road
  • A request for a zoning certificate for 2055 Nelson Miller Parkway

If you have questions or comments about any of these proposals, please let me know or contact the case managers listed in the report.

Neighborhood Watch

NW

If you're concerned about crime in your area and looking for ways you and your neighbors can get involved, you might consider starting a Neighborhood Watch. The QR Code above connects you with all the information you need such as help in finding your police division and beat, who to contact at LMPD to get started, what responsibilities fall to the members of the watch, and much more. If you have questions, please let me know. I'm happy to facilitate a Neighborhood Watch in your area!

New Metro Public Works Pages

I mentioned in May that Metro Public Works added a web page specifically to provide schedules, maps, and current information on roads and paving projects in our city. They have since added several other pages to help residents more easily access important information:

  • Road Closures - This page includes details on road closures related to KYTC construction projects, Louisville Water Company projects, and more.
  • Mowing - The mowing page has a tentative schedule for the six mowing cycles planned for 2025 and explains which agencies are responsible for various locations (vacant lots, bike trails, metro-owned lots, etc.). Public Works has plans to add weekly mowing updates and a mowing map, too.
  • Transportation Capital Projects - Interested in learning more about major transportation projects? This page has details about roadway and bicycle/pedestrian projects (including some along Westport Road and La Grange Road) planned throughout Louisville Metro.
  • Louisville Loop - This page includes a story map as well as a dashboard showing progress on the project and other related information.

Their next order of business is to work on pages related to potholes and speed humps. As soon as I find out those are ready, I will let you know.
