Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you have plans to enjoy what will hopefully be a beautiful weekend. I think we're supposed to see temperatures in the 80s on Sunday!

Spring is my favorite time of year: a time of rebirth, getting outside, working in the garden, etc. It's also when our racing season starts, people start to really flock to our parks, and - on the other end of the fun spectrum, I suppose - spring cleaning takes place!

While having a clean house, garage, or yard is important, so is having a clean city. We have made consistent investments over the years to help us get (and stay) there. A couple of examples are the Clean Collaborative and the 'Another Way' program. In 2024 alone, the Clean Collaborative Crew removed almost 17,000 bags of litter, 759 tires, and more than 3,600 other items from along our roadways. These totals came from their regularly scheduled routes (Goose Creek Road, Murphy Lane, and La Grange Road, for example) as well as additional service requests (such as picking up almost two dozen shopping carts off of Accomack Drive).

You may think of 'Another Way' as a program only to help those less fortunate in our community. Well, it certainly does that! They do fantastic work helping folks find housing, employment, and a host of other things. But, those who participate in that program spend many hours picking up litter. Some of you may remember seeing a group last year filling almost 100 trash bags from under the I-265 ramp to Chamberlain Lane. While other agencies assisted in that effort, the 'Another Way' team was a huge part of that work. They do this consistently all across our city.

I am very proud of what these two groups do and believe they have made quite a difference in our community. I expect you'll see a continuation of resources towards keeping our city clean in the mayor's budget address next week.

Of course, you and I play a role, too. It can be as simple as securing loose items in your car or truck or as involved as arranging a cleanup in your neighborhood. (While registration is now closed for Brightside's Spring Community-Wide Cleanup tomorrow, neighborhoods can host a cleanup at any point throughout the year.) If I've sold you on the importance of doing your part, feel free to join me and employees from Spectrum tomorrow at 11 a.m. to help clean up in E. P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park. We'll gather near the tennis courts adjacent to the main parking lot.

As always, please don't hesitate to call or email my office if we can help you in any way.

'Coffee With Your Councilman' Rescheduled

coffee

Jon Pilbean with Metro Homeless Services speaks at a recent coffee meeting.

I apologize for the late notice, but the 'Coffee With Your Councilman' scheduled for Monday, April 21 has been moved to Thursday, April 24. We will meet at MozzaPi located at 12102 La Grange Road rather than the Northeast Regional Library. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m.

When: Thursday, April 24 at 9 a.m.

Where: MozzaPi, 12102 La Grange Road

Layla George, our scheduled guest for this month's coffee meeting, is unable to join us on the new date. However, the Belvedere Project is an important one, so I'll work to get her on the agenda for a future meeting. For Thursday, I look forward to sharing the latest news from City Hall and answering any questions or concerns from those in attendance. Hope to see you then!

Mayor's Budget Address - Thursday, April 24

budget address

Mayor Craig Greenberg will present his recommended FY26 budget to the Metro Council on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Metro Council Chambers. For those who are interested in what this budget will look like but are unable to attend in person, the meeting will be broadcast live and streamed online as described above. Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These can include requests for changes in zoning, conditional use permits, variances, landscape plans, and more. There are two projects in this week's report tied to property in District 17. One is related to a 7 Brew Coffee to be located at 10013 Brownsboro Road. The request includes the drive-thru coffee shop, a cooler/storage structure, landscaping, a dumpster enclosure, etc. The other project involves updating the signage for a Verizon store located at 4830 Norton Healthcare Boulevard. If you have any questions, please contact the case manager for each proposal at zach.schwager@louisvilleky.gov or drake.watson@louisvilleky.gov, respectively.

Prescription Drug Take Back Event - Tomorrow

drug take-back

If you've done some spring cleaning recently that included sifting through a medicine cabinet, you'll have an opportunity tomorrow to properly dispose of things you might have come across like prescription drugs, inhalers, EpiPens, needles (capped), patches and more. There will be eleven locations across Louisville accepting items from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The most easily accessible places for District 17 residents are listed below. For more information, click here. (The link says the next Take Back Day is April 26, but LMPD moved its event up a week due to Kentucky Derby Festival activities.)

  • Norton Healthcare – 9880 Angies Way
  • Kroger – 12501 Shelbyville Road
  • Kroger – 2219 Holiday Manor
  • Walgreens – 12101 Shelbyville Road

Paving Projects

Now that temperatures are trending a little warmer, Public Works can continue working on paving projects planned for 2024-25. There are several scheduled for District 17 this spring, and I will share the timeline for those as soon as I get that information from Public Works. There is one upcoming project just outside our district that might interest some of you. Factory Lane from La Grange Road to Terra Crossing Boulevard will be resurfaced soon, weather permitting. I'll be meeting with Public Works in a month or so to discuss paving needs in the district for this coming fiscal year. If you have questions about a road near you, don't hesitate to call or email my office.

LIHEAP Spring Subsidy Cooling Enrollment

Kentucky households may qualify for a one-time benefit to help with cooling costs through this year's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Spring Subsidy Cooling Component. This program is designed to help households with incomes up to 150% of the federal poverty guidelines and does not require a disconnect notice, past due bill, or eviction notice. Funds are paid directly to the household's electricity vendor. Applications will be accepted through May 30 on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested in applying must schedule an appointment and can do so here or by calling 502-991-8391.
