D-10's Visually Impaired Preschool Services celebrates 40 years! 

Located on Goldsmith Lane near Newburg Road in District 10,  Visually Impaired Preschool Services (VIPS) provides early interventions for blind and visually impaired kids and their families across Kentucky and Indiana.  At right, Executive Director Diane Nelson spoke at the VIPS 40th celebration this week.

VIPS was born in 1985, just like CW Raymond, and is celebrating turning 40! Learn more at vips.org.  At left, Councilwoman Raymond checked out tactile play equipment at Visually Impaired Preschool Services.

Newcomer Academy students celebrate home nations' cultures

CW Raymond attended a special event at Newcomer Academy, in District 10, last Friday. "This is Africa: A Pan-African Celebration of Culture and Identity," let students celebrate their home nations in a special showcase format. The event was featured on WHAS-11's Reason to Smile segment.  The goal of Newcomer Academy is to provide a welcoming and respectful environment to meet the needs of sixth through twelfth grade English language learners. Many students at Newcomer are in their first year of school in the U.S.  In the above photo, Newcomer Academy Principal Gwen Snow, Kevin Uyisenga, Executive Director of See Forward Ministries on Hikes Lane, and CW Raymond.

How to report potholes

Three ways to report potholes to Public Works:  1. Report online. The online map at right shows the current status of reports to Public Works.  2. Use X (Twitter) to send the location of the hole to @LouMetro311 and include the hashtag #502pothole. 3. Call Metro311 or 574-5000 to report potholes or any other issues.

The 400-pound gorilla at the Louisville Zoo reminds you to vote! 

Let's not disappoint Casey, pictured at right. Vote for the Louisville Zoo, nominated for two awards as part of USA Today’s “10Best Readers’ Choice Awards” program. The Zoo is up for “Best Zoo” and for “Best Zoo Membership.” Voting continues through Monday, March 10, and the rules allow the public to vote online for one nominee per category, per day.

LIHEAP Winter Crisis enrollment continues

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Winter Crisis enrollment continues through the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. Appointments are required in advance to apply. Eligible households can apply for one or both LIHEAP Winter Crisis and MSD’s EWRAP (Emergency Wastewater Rate Assistance Program) with one single appointment. Read more about EWRAP here.   Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis through March 31, or until designated funds have been expended. Jefferson County residents meeting eligibility can call the automated scheduler at 991-8391 or visit online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com.

Sign up for Parks' Spring Break Camps for youth March 31 to April 4

Louisville Parks and Recreation is offering opportunities for kids to stay active while on spring break. Centers that will offer traditional Spring Break Camps March 31 to April 4, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., are Metro Arts, Molly Leonard Portland, Sun Valley, Beechmont, Berrytown, Douglass and Cyril Allgeier. Participants must be 5-12 years of age for all camps except Metro Arts, which is for ages 9-12. The cost of Spring Break Camp is $60 per camper. Youths will enjoy a range of activities including athletics, games, crafts and a field trip. Spots are limited, register a child here.

March 8 - Louisville Free Public Library again partners with Scripps National Spelling Bee to host regional competition

The Louisville Regional Spelling Bee—the Fleur de Bee—is a few weeks away and the “buzz” is growing. On Saturday, March 8, eighteen finalists from elementary and middle schools in the 28-county region will converge on the Main Library to compete for a spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in May. 

This is the second year the Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) has partnered with Scripps National Spelling Bee to be a regional host. The competition will begin at 10 a.m. in the auditorium of the Main Library (301 York Street).

March 9 - next tour at the Louisville Water Tower

The Louisville Water Tower is one of Louisville's eight national historic landmarks and a must-see for both locals and tourists. Fun fact: It's actually the oldest water tower in the U.S.! The tower opens its doors to the public on the second Sunday of every month. Next up is March 9. Residents can purchase tickets here.

Neighborhood Institute is back, apply by February 27

The Neighborhood Institute is a leadership education program designed to equip neighborhood leaders with the skills and resources needed to initiate positive change in the community through their neighborhood, homeowner, and condo associations. Classes meet every Tuesday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Center For Neighborhoods Offices, 1126 Berry Blvd. Suite 300, for 11 consecutive weeks, March 11 to May 27, with a Graduation Celebration May 27. Dinner is provided each week. Attendance is free, but space is limited, and advance registration is required. Applications will be accepted through 5 p.m. on February 27.

Louisville Metro FY26 External Agency Fund grant applications open through March 3

Applications are being accepted for FY 26 External Agency Fund grants through March 3. These grants are awarded annually to qualifying nonprofit organizations offering social services or programs in Louisville/Jefferson County. EAF grants provide critical funding to nonprofits serving Louisville’s diverse community needs. Once applications are submitted, they enter a competitive process and are scored by a panel based on impact and measurable outcomes. Successful applicants’ proposals will be recommended for funding in the mayor’s FY 26 budget proposal to Metro Council.

Each of the following Louisville Metro agencies will administer the EAF Funds:

• Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods: Youth Engagement Services Funding
• Office of Resilience and Community Services: Community Services Funding
• Office of Arts + Creative Industries: Arts, Heritage, and Creative Industry Funding

Locate legal Short Term Rentals with Metro's interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit).
