At times, our office receives communications and/or phone calls expressing concerns regarding zoning changes. As you may be aware, Kentucky law requires the Planning Commission to hold public hearings to consider zoning change requests. The public hearings provide an opportunity for citizens to express their concerns.
Kentucky law also requires the Planning Commission to forward their recommendation, as part of the record, to the Metro Council. The record includes all letters, comments, testimony, etc., from proponents as well as opponents. Due process prohibits the Metro Council from considering anything not contained in the Planning Commission record or received after the date of the public hearing.
We encourage residents that have an interest in a zoning change to attend one of the public hearings, email comments to the Planning Commission Case Manager, or call the Planning Commission at 574-6230. In making the final decision, Council members may consider only the record made before the Planning Commission. All issues in the Planning Commission record will be carefully reviewed. Below is a step-by-step guide to the process a zoning case must go through. If you have any questions about the process, please call 574-1113 or email Lisa Ammon at Lisa.Ammon@louisvilleky.gov.
