This week has been a bustling one in District 13. I kicked off the week by attending the awards banquet for the Fairdale Fire Department. It was a privilege to present proclamations to a remarkable group of firefighters, acknowledging their bravery, dedication, and professionalism in protecting the lives and property of Louisville's residents.
I had the pleasure of hosting Congressman Morgan McGarvey on a tour of Jefferson Memorial Forest to view the enhancements made to the Tom Wallace Recreation Area. We were joined by Deputy Mayor Nicole George, Metro Parks Executive Director Michelle King, Metro Parks Director Jason Canuel, and Parks and Recreation Administrator Jessica Kane. The recently reopened Tom Wallace Recreation Area boasts an accessible trail around the lake, a boardwalk through the wetlands, a kayak launch, a new pavilion, and new fishing spots around the lake. If you haven't yet visited the Tom Wallace Recreation Area, I encourage you to explore the natural beauty right in our backyard.
I’ve been organizing programs for seniors at the Fairdale Playtorium in collaboration with Fairdale High School. On Wednesday, the seniors and students from the high school gathered for lunch and enjoyed some social time together. It was a fantastic visit, and moving forward, special needs students will join the seniors for lunch and crafting sessions twice a month. Additionally, nursing students from the Fairdale High School Academy will offer health screenings for the seniors. This initiative will foster a wonderful intergenerational experience for both the seniors and students.

The Louisville Zoo is spreading holiday cheer this December with a month-long lineup of festive activities for the whole family. From animal-themed holiday enrichment to a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, there’s something for everyone to enjoy this season.

Qannik’s Beary Happy Holiday (Weekends: Dec. 7–8, 14–15, 21–22) Join Qannik, the Zoo’s beloved polar bear, and her animal companions as they enjoy special holiday-themed enrichment activities. Sponsored by Great Clips, this festive event runs select weekends in December.

Santa and Mrs. Claus Visit (Dec. 21–22, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) The power couple of the season will make a stop at the Louisville Zoo for meet-and-greets and photo opportunities with guests. Families can also enjoy sweet treats like cookie decorating and s’mores during this special weekend.

Holiday Scavenger Hunt (All Month) Guests can embark on a Zoo-wide scavenger hunt for all ages. Scan the QR code at the Zoo entrance to join the adventure and complete challenges for a chance to win Zoo-themed prizes.

Louisville Metro Animal Services (MAS) is the only open intake shelter in Jefferson County. Serving as an authority for public safety and the humane treatment of animals, MAS provides a wide range of services including adoption, foster, and volunteer programs, animal care and control enforcement, and collaborative efforts with local partners around our city. MAS strives to create a safer and more compassionate environment for all residents, human and animal alike.

 The program continues to register thousands of children for Imagination Library this year and ensure more children have access to high quality books in early childhood. We are doing one final enrollment push before the end of the year. Our goal is to reach 18,000 children enrolled by the end of the year and we are very close!

Families of crash victims and road safety advocates gathered with Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and others at JCTC Downtown on Sunday, November 17 for Louisville’s third annual World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The event is held every third Sunday in November to honor those who have lost their lives or been impacted by roadway crashes.
The event organizers, which include Matthew’s Bridge, Inc. and Vision Zero Louisville, are renewing their call for state legislation that allows automated speed enforcement in Kentucky. According to the Federal Highway Administration, speed safety cameras can reduce roadway fatalities by 20 to 37 percent. Studies show higher speeds result in greater impact at the time of a crash, which leads to more severe injuries and deaths.
In 2022, Louisville Metro Council passed an ordinance calling for zero roadway deaths by 2050 through a transportation safety initiative called Vision Zero Louisville. The initiative is managed by Louisville Metro Public Works, in partnership with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The initiative promotes a multi-layered approach to saving lives, including redesigning roadways to encourage appropriate speeds, and improving trauma-related care for crash victims.

With the holidays approaching, Louisville Metro Police Department urges everyone to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding your property. Most of the recent car break-ins involved unlocked vehicles, and the stolen vehicles had keys left inside them. Additionally, several incidents involved open garages resulting in thefts from vehicles and auto thefts. By taking simple preventative measures, we can significantly reduce the attractiveness of our neighborhoods to criminals.
Please consider the following prevention tips to greatly reduce your chances of being victimized:

 Experience some holiday magic as the annual Polar Express Pajama Party pulls in to the station at the Southwest Regional Library (9725 Dixie Highway) on Friday, December 13, 6 – 8 p.m. Kids can come dressed in their pajamas and enjoy free games, crafts, and activities for the whole family.
There will be a reading of The Polar Express, followed by a screening of the movie. Children can also get their picture taken with Mrs. Claus, Elsa from Frozen, and the Polar Express conductor; enjoy a cookie and hot chocolate pit stop; and get a free book of their very own.
