Louisville Zoo offers free admission to active and retired military on Veterans Day

In celebration and appreciation of military heroes, the Louisville Zoo, in partnership with Kroger, is offering free admission to all active and retired military personnel and their immediate families on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. Military guests are simply required to present proof of service at the Zoo’s admission windows.

Acceptable forms of identification include a U.S Uniformed Services ID Card, Retired ID Card, current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), veterans organization card (such as American Legion or VFW), a photo in uniform, wearing a uniform in-person, DD214 or citation/commendation. Immediate family includes individuals living in the same household.

Along with free admission, military personnel and their families can enjoy exclusive discounts on Veterans Day, including 10 percent off purchases at the Zoo gift shop and 50 percent off food and drink at Zoo concessions.

“We are grateful to all military veterans for their service,” said Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney. “We look forward to welcoming you and your families to the Zoo on this special day of recognition and appreciation.”

Active military members receive free admission to the Zoo year-round, and their dependents receive 10 percent off general admission when accompanied by active military personnel with a valid ID. Military guests are encouraged to check with the leisure travel offices at their bases in advance of their visit for other available discounts.

Metro Government launches program to increase rentals for houseless people

Landlord Incentive Program offers financial incentive to local property owners

Local property owners who partner with the Louisville Metro Housing and Support Division are now eligible for a financial incentive.

The Landlord Incentive Program offers up to $2,000 to landlords who agree to rent their properties for 12 months to clients of the Housing and Support Division, which aims to connect houseless people in Louisville to housing.

By participating in this program, property owners can help provide stable housing for families in need while also receiving financial support and on-site supportive services.

Participants will receive $1,000 once they’ve met with Housing and Support staff and agreed to rent their property to a client, and they will receive another $1,000 upon completion of a 12-month lease.

This incentive program is in addition to federal subsidies that provide on-going rental assistance during the period of the lease. Supportive services, including on-site visits, are also provided as part of the program.

By partnering with the Housing and Support Division, local landlords will contribute to a solution that ensures more families have access to safe and affordable housing.

LIHEAP Subsidy enrollment open now for eligible households

Low Income Heating Assistance Subsidy enrollment is now available through Kentucky’s Community Action Network for eligible Kentucky households. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis through December 20, or until designated funds have been expended.

LIHEAP Fall Subsidy provides households with a one-time benefit depending on housing category, fuel type used for heating, and income level. The benefit can be applied towards home heating costs for electric, natural gas, propane, coal, wood, or fuel oil.

Benefits are paid directly to the household's energy vendor. Prior LIHEAP assistance does not impact a household’s eligibility. Households must meet eligibility requirements, including income eligibility of up to and including 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

In Jefferson County, LIHEAP Fall Subsidy is available through the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. Appointments are required in advance to apply.

A toll-free automated appointment system is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to schedule an in-person appointment at one of seven locations. The automated scheduler will provide details about these locations as well as eligibility and required documentation.

Louisville Metro Council Holiday Food Drive has begun

This holiday season, please consider donating items at various locations throughout the community. The food will be donated equally between the 13 Community Ministries.

Leaf drop off available for residents now through December 7

Mowing over leaves to mulch them back into your lawn is a great option for reducing waste. Mulching not only returns vital nutrients to the soil, but experts say that it can help your grass grow even better the following year!

Never blow leaves into the street! If you see Street Sweeping signs posted on your street, please make sure to move your vehicle so any leaves that fell naturally on the street can be properly cleaned. 

The Metro Public Works free leaf drop-off sites are open Tuesday-Saturdays, now through December 7. Drop-off will not be available on November 28 and 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Only leaves will be accepted. Leaves can be loose, in paper/compostable bags, or reusable containers. Containers used to bring leaves to the drop-off sites must be taken back by residents.

Tiffany Bolling from the Family Resource Center has reached out to request food donations for the school pantry at Camp Taylor Elementary School. 

Not only do we feed our students and their families at Camp Taylor and Audubon Traditional Elementary Schools, we also have a food pantry in front of the school to feed the community. 

Our pantry is usually stocked through Dare to Care, but the food goes so quickly. Our homeless demographic has doubled from last school year. I am trying to keep up with the nutritional support I can provide, but it's a struggle.

Bring a can, save on admission during Wild Winter Days at the Louisville Zoo

Join the Louisville Zoo and Kroger in supporting Dare to Care Food Bank and local conservation efforts this winter

The Louisville Zoo invites guests to celebrate Wild Winter Days, today through February 28. Wild Winter Days offers discounted admission to the Zoo and incorporates a food drive for Dare to Care Food Bank.

Guests who bring at least one non-perishable food item per person may purchase discounted tickets at the Zoo ticket windows for $10.50 per adult and $7.50 per child or senior. Twenty-five cents of every admission ticket will also support the Zoo’s conservation efforts.

Since this partnership began in 2009, the Zoo has collected more than 30,000 pounds of food, thanks to the generosity of its guests. That is the weight of nearly five male rhinoceroses!

Dare to Care Food Bank’s most needed items include canned meats like tuna and chicken, as well as canned fruit and vegetables, beans, peanut butter, soup, rice, cereal, fruit juice, and pasta. No glass containers. More details on items of need are available at daretocare.org.

The discount is available only at the gate and cannot be applied to online purchases, special fee-based programs, prepaid groups, field trips or other discounts. No refunds will be provided for tickets purchased online or in advance. While multiple canned good items per person are appreciated, only one discount applies per ticket.

Warm up around the fire afterward, or head indoors, where you can visit our reptiles and enjoy snacks and drinks. Participants must be 21 and over. November 21 - next "Once Upon An Orchestra” event, providing free musical storytelling performances for families at Louisville libraries

The Louisville Free Public Library and the Louisville Orchestra are again bringing “Once Upon An Orchestra” public performances to all LFPL locations through March. 

Presented free, each branch will host one of six different, unique family programs that weave music and storytelling together in an interactive experience. Louisville Orchestra musicians perform original music created around familiar and beloved children’s books. The hour-long experiences include a 30-minute small ensemble performance preceded by a hands-on activity to build a musical instrument from recycled materials, so everyone can play along.

For “Once Upon An Orchestra,” composers from the LO Creators Corps have developed original musical scores to accompany a number of beloved children’s books, including Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In addition, this year’s series features two new compositions – Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.

Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). An interactive map shows not only construction locations but also details on the projects, including the status, type, and even the project manager's phone number. While the map shows all planned projects, please note that it currently does not display repairs on water main breaks.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Please report non-working streetlights to LG&E.  Report a hazard on a state road or highway, such as non-working highway lighting or potholes.

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
