Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a great week and were able to take advantage of the phenomenal weather this week has brought.

Today, I want to talk about two attractions in our city that I was able to help highlight this week. First, you may have read about the historic investments being poured into the Kentucky Exposition Center. Over the last couple of sessions, the state has allocated about $500 million toward renovations, improvements, and additional infrastructure at the fairgrounds. These investments will ensure it remains a great place for the state fair but also large expos and conventions, solidifying our place as a top destination for those kinds of events. This is important, because a little more than 20% of our total employment in Jefferson County is hospitality related.

Speaking of the fairgrounds, I'd be remiss if I didn't remind you that this weekend is the last weekend of the 120th Kentucky State Fair. If you haven't been yet, I encourage you to check it out - sample the food, learn more about agriculture in our state, admire the entries submitted by your fellow Kentuckians, or ride some rides. It will be a great way to spend part of your your weekend.

Secondly, I spent this morning at Tom Sawyer State Park filming a piece to run on MetroTV that highlights all this gem has to offer. Next weekend, for example, the park will host the USA BMX Bluegrass Nationals which will bring more than 18,000 visitors over the course of the weekend. (Be mindful of this event if you're in the area as traffic might be a little heavier than usual.) Other amenities include 16 pickleball courts, tennis courts, a new playground, a place to practice archery, softball fields, a pool, and several miles of trails. We are lucky to have an anchor like Tom Sawyer State Park in our backyard. If you're not familiar with it, I hope you'll give it a try!

As always, please don't hesitate to reach out if my office can be of service.

New Berrytown Park Playground Complete

Berrytown Park playground

Berrytown Park is located at 1300 Heafer Road.

The new Berrytown Park playground is here! As you can see, it includes slides, several different types of swings, climbing structures, and much more. The playground is adjacent to the new basketball court and can be accessed by the walking path where we filled in some open sections last year. The park really does have something for most everyone. I hope you'll get a chance to check it out!

Office of Planning Weekly Activity Report

Each week, the Metro Office of Planning creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These can include requests for changes in zoning, conditional use permits, variances, landscape plans, and more. There is one new application regarding property located in District 17, a conditional use permit to allow a short-term rental in a non-primary residence at 11002 Craigs Creek Place. Please contact the case manager at ethan.lett@louisvilleky.gov with any questions or comments.

Pop-Up Drop-Off - Tomorrow

Pop Up Drop Off

The August Pop-Up Drop-Off is tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Metro Fleet Services, 3515 Newburg Road. This would be a great opportunity to properly dispose of things like large household items, electronics, prescription medications, personal documents, and more. For more information and a list of suggestions to make your trip more efficient, click here.

Louisville Bats Tickets Still Available

I mentioned early last month that the Louisville Bats were offering District 17 residents the opportunity to catch a ball game for free on Wednesday, September 4. That voucher includes a ticket to the game, a hot dog, and a small soft drink. As of late last week, our district still had more than 230 vouchers left. Individuals interested in attending the game should fill out this form, while groups wanting 20 or more vouchers should use this one. Each district's allotment is monitored closely, so register soon if you're interested!

Hike, Bike, and Paddle 2024

hike bike paddle

The Labor Day Hike, Bike, and Paddle returns Monday, September 2 to the Waterfront Park Great Lawn. The program starts around 8 a.m. with music and free fitness activities such as Tai Chi, yoga, and Zumba. In addition, free t-shirts will be available to the first 2,000 attendees. The hike, bike, and paddle events begin at 10 a.m. You can find routes/distances for those activities and more general information on the event here.

Kentuckiana Youth Poet Laureate Competition

Do you know someone between the ages of 13 and 19 who excels in poetry? If so, they may have an opportunity to become Kentuckiana's first youth poet laureate. Those interested should submit five poems (along with a civic brag sheet) for consideration by September 1, 2024. The competition is open only to those who live in Jefferson, Bullitt, Oldham, Hardin, and Floyd (IN) Counties. The winner will represent Kentuckiana at speaking engagements until the 2025 competition. Click here for more information.
