Newburg Days Festival - Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 11

The annual Newburg Days Festival, sponsored by Councilwoman Dr. Barbara Shanklin (D-2), has been running for over fifty years. This year’s festival will be held in Petersburg Park and will begin on Friday, August 9 through Sunday, August 11.

The Petersburg/Newburg Park is located at the corner of E. Indian Trail and Petersburg Road. The festival will include vendors, food, kid’s activities, parade, live music, DJs, basketball tournament, cornhole tournament, and youth football games. Kid’s activities include a rock-climbing wall, skating rink, petting zoo, and more!

Enrollment continues for LIHEAP summer subsidy

Jefferson County residents can apply for electric assistance through Louisville Metro RCS Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy is here to help Kentucky households offset summer cooling costs. Enrollment started July 16 and runs until September 13, or until designated funds are depleted, on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Summer Subsidy Component provides households with incomes up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electric vendor. Jefferson County residents wishing to apply may schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Vision Zero Louisville seeking public feedback on speeding

As part of Vision Zero Louisville – the city’s transportation safety initiative that prioritizes the prevention of fatal and serious injury crashes – partners of the initiative, including Louisville Metro Public Works and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are seeking public input on speeding and speed management in the community. Louisville residents are invited to share their experiences and opinions in a brief online survey, which is available through September 30.

The survey results – coupled with crash data, current local conditions, and a peer review of cities leading the way in terms of speed management and Vision Zero – will help shape Louisville’s first-ever Speed Management Plan. This plan is a multifaceted and balanced effort to manage speeds on non-interstate streets through roadway design, intersection design, modernizing policies and practices related to speed limits, and enforcement.

Studies show higher speeds result in greater impact at the time of a crash, which leads to more severe injuries and deaths. NHTSA reports speeding contributes to more than 25 percent of all traffic-related deaths nationwide.

Trees are one of the most effective ways to deal with heat stress and improve air quality and public health. Louisville is in the process of developing an urban forest master plan to improve its trees and tree canopy so that all Louisville residents have access to the benefits that trees provide.

Remember the Camp Taylor Elementary School pantry as you shop

Tiffany Bolling from the Family Resource Center has reached out to request food donations for the school pantry at Camp Taylor Elementary School. 

Not only do we feed our students and their families at Camp Taylor and Audubon Traditional Elementary Schools, we also have a food pantry in front of the school to feed the community. 

Our pantry is usually stocked through Dare to Care, but the food goes so quickly. Our homeless demographic has doubled from last school year. I am trying to keep up with the nutritional support I can provide, but it's a struggle.

If you are able to assist in getting us food to fill our pantry, donations can be sent to: Camp Taylor Elementary School, The Kid Connection FRC, 1446 Belmar Drive, Louisville, KY, 40213. 

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format.

The Zoo is celebrating the summer with a movie series under the stars! Enjoy Cinema Safari films for the younger set. Join the Zoo staff in the Oasis Field at sundown to watch on our giant inflatable screen. Gates opens at 8 p.m. The movies start at sundown. Tickets are $5 for non-members, free for Zoo members. Tickets must be purchased at the gate and cannot be purchased online. Concessions will be available for purchase. Guests are encouraged to pack their own blankets and lawn chairs.

August 13 - next Zoning Matters: Conversations with a City Planner

These conversations are part of the ongoing Land Development Code (LDC) Reform. The LDC Reform is an equity focused approach to revise the LDC consistently with Plan 2040 to allow for increased housing choices and opportunities in new and existing neighborhoods, to create procedures and regulations that are easier to use and increase the quality of life by reducing the concentration of environmental hazards near housing.

August 14 - Metro Commission for Persons with Disabilities to offer screening of "Crip Camp" documentary 

It was 34 years ago that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, protecting the rights of people with disabilities. To mark this important anniversary and to wrap up celebrations of Disability Pride Month 2024, the Louisville Metro Commission for Persons with Disabilities invites the community to a screening of the documentary “Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution,” followed by a panel discussion with local community advocates.

“Crip Camp” takes a spirited look at grassroots activism on the heels of the Woodstock concert in 1969, as a group of teen campers are inspired to join the fight for disability civil rights. In the early 1970s, teenagers with disabilities faced a future shaped by isolation, discrimination, and institutionalization. 

Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp "for the handicapped" in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and make-out sessions awaiting everyone, and campers who felt fulfilled as young human beings. Their bonds endured as they migrated West to Berkeley, California – a promised land for a growing and diverse disability community where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption and unity might secure life-changing accessibility for millions. 

Co-directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Nicole Newnham and film mixer and former camper Jim LeBrecht, this joyous and exuberant documentary, a milestone in the fight for disability visibility, received funding from California Humanities through the California Documentary Project in 2018.  

The film will be screened August 14 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Actors Theatre of Louisville, 316 W. Main Street. There will be no admission charge for this event. Please RSVP by calling 714-5128.

“As we continue to disrupt the narratives around disability, I think my favorite quote from the film is ‘Disability doesn’t make you exceptional, but questioning what you think you know about it does,’” said Louisville Metro Government ADA Coordinator Sarah Teeters. “By bringing the community together in a safe space, we provide an opportunity to challenge those preconceived notions and misconceptions and foster greater awareness about disability.” 

Funding for the screening of ‘Crip Camp’ was provided by the LMG Office of Resilience & Community Services, the LMG Office of Housing & Community Development, Gathering Strength, the Actors Theater of Louisville, and anonymous contributors.

Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. Help with prescription medication copays may be possible through the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. Call 1-800-633-8100, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). An interactive map shows not only construction locations but also details on the projects, including the status, type, and even the project manager's phone number. While the map shows all planned projects, please note that it currently does not display repairs on water main breaks.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

"Embrace the Journey" website for parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Please report non-working streetlights to LG&E.  Report a hazard on a state road or highway, such as non-working highway lighting or potholes.

Reporting potholes

• Report online. 
• Use Twitter by sending the location of the hole to @LouMetro311 and include the hashtag #502pothole.
• Call Metro311 or 574-5000 to report potholes or any other issues. 

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
