Louisville Zoo Calling Volunteer Gardeners!

Orientation for the Zoo’s Adopt-a-Garden set for April 13

The Louisville Zoo is seeking experienced gardeners: individuals, families (ages 16+) and groups with green thumbs to participate in its Adopt-a-Garden program. This unique volunteer opportunity allows participants with a passion for gardening to contribute to the beauty of the Zoo by adopting specific garden sites within the Zoo and caring for them throughout the 2024 growing season.

A required orientation session, which includes an overview of the Adopt-a-Garden program, will be held on Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at the MetaZoo amphitheater.

Once enrolled, volunteers will be required to submit a plan for their plot and will be responsible for planting, weeding, watering and maintaining the garden throughout the growing season, from mid-April through mid-November, including spring and fall bed clean-up.

Volunteers may purchase their own plants, with the added benefit of a 10 percent discount at Frank Otte Nursery and Garden Center locations at 2930 Bardstown Road and 12902 Shelbyville Road. Alternatively, with prior approval, volunteers may bring plants from their own gardens.

Longtime Adopt-a-Garden volunteer, Anne Ramsey, shared her enthusiasm for the program, stating, “I enjoy participating in this program. I have had my little patch of the Zoo near ZooVision that I maintain with limelight hydrangeas, daylilies and shasta daisies. I take pride in my little garden as I watch kids and families walk by building memories at the Zoo. Devoting two hours per week to this peaceful endeavor allows me and my husband, Jerry Randoph, to connect with nature, contribute to the beauty of the Zoo and immerse our hands in the enriching soil of the earth.”

Please RSVP to mary.taylor@louisvilleky.gov by April 11 to attend the required orientation session scheduled for April 13.

For additional information, please visit louisvillezoo.org/adoptagarden.

For other volunteer opportunities at the Louisville Zoo, visit louisvillezoo.org/volunteer.

Zoo Hours

The Zoo is open daily year-round. Spring / summer hours are 10 a.m. ─ 5 p.m. (enjoy until 6 p.m.). The Zoo is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Visit louisvillezoo.org for more info.

Louisville Metro Police 3rd Division Recognizes Officers of the Month

Officer 1

February 2024 Officers of the Month

On 2/12/24, 3rd division officers were dispatched to 13401 Dixie Hwy at the Circle K on 4 subjects refusing to leave. Upon arrival, Officers were told the subjects left but one of them was likely a known suspect from a shooting that took place the day prior. Officers searched the area and located multiple subjects in Medora Park located at 6211 Pendleton Rd. When Officer Derek Hughes approached the subjects, one was walking away and disregarded verbal commands to come to Officer Hughes before fleeing on foot. Officer Hughes caught the subject shortly thereafter and used a reasonable amount of force to get the subject into custody. A gun was discarded by the subject during the pursuit and drugs were found on his person following his apprehension and subsequent search. Officer Hughes struck his left knee on the concrete barrier wall on Pendleton Rd just east of the park, causing a 3cm laceration. Officer Hughes was transported by EMS to University of Louisville Hospital Southwest where his injuries were treated. Officer Barone was nearby when the foot pursuit began and rushed to the scene to assist in the apprehension. Officer Barone observed his beat partner was injured, called for EMS, then conducted an investigation into the subject resulting in a narcotics trafficker being taken off the streets. Officer Barone recovered a gun and suspected heroin/fentanyl from the subject. The subject was arrested and charged with Trafficking in heroin, Trafficking in Fentanyl, Convicted felon in possession of a handgun, Fleeing 1st Degree (on foot), Criminal Trespassing 3rd, Criminal Mischief 3rd, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The actions of Officers Hughes and Barone represent the dedication and professionalism exhibited by LMPD officers on a daily basis. They should be commended for their ongoing efforts to apprehend dangerous felons in our community.

officer 2

March 2024 Officer of the Month

On 2/23/24, the LMPD Air Unit was conducting a canvas of the 3rd Division following a shooting. While in the course of operation, a subject pointed a powerful green laser directly at the helicopter. Officer Lloyd was dispatched to the location where the laser had come from and coordinated with the Air Unit in real time to locate the subject, who was reportedly armed with a rifle per the Air Unit. Officer Lloyd located the subject, conducted an investigation and placed the subject under arrest for KRS 183.887 "Laser/ Vision Interference- Light Directed At Aircraft W/ Disrupted Travel," which is a Class D felony. This arrest was a prime example of Officer Lloyd's investigative ability which he demonstrated through his professionalism and leadership. Officer Lloyd should be commended for his dedication to public safety.
