BBB Warns of Victims Losing Hundreds of Dollars to Scam Bourbon Websites

March 20, 2024 – BBB serving Greater Kentucky and South Central Indiana warns of scam bourbon retail sites and social media accounts targeting consumers in the Kentucky area.

Local consumers have reported websites to BBB that appear to be legitimate and claim to offer high-end bourbons, wines, and liquors at low prices. In each case where the consumer made a purchase, the product was not received, the consumer was sent incorrect or fake tracking numbers, and/or the consumer could not get in contact with the company to report a problem or receive a refund. Victims have reported losing hundreds of dollars to these sites.

One consumer stated to BBB, “I tracked the shipment over a day or so, and then got a notice saying it was ‘on hold’ pending an additional $180 insurance payment I needed to make. This payment would supposedly be refunded after delivery. I inquired about the need for insurance (which was news to me) with both the shipper and the seller, via email, and was told by both of them to just pay it.”

Other local consumers have reported being scammed by users in bourbon-related Facebook groups claiming to sell hard-to-find bourbons.

BBB offers the following tips to help consumers avoid these scams:

  • Know the advertiser or company. It’s easy for a fake website to appear legitimate, or even mimic a famous retailer’s site. Make sure you are shopping on a trusted company’s website. If the site is missing contact information, that is a red flag. If you want to purchase from a company or seller you are unfamiliar with, check their profiles first at bbb.org.
  • Check a website’s security settings. If the site is secure, its URL should start with HTTPS:// and include a lock icon on the purchase or shopping car page.
  • Be a savvy shopper. Take the time to read any fine print before submitting your order. Look for the return policy. Know before you buy!
  • Protect your personal information. Read a site’s privacy policy so you know what personal data is being requested and how it will be used. No privacy policy? Consider that a red flag.
  • Beware of deals that are too good to be true. Simply put, name-brand products advertised at unbelievably low prices often indicate a scam. At the very least, you might be stuck paying hidden fees or inadvertently signing up for a monthly subscription.
  • Shop with a credit card. If a transaction proves to be fraudulent, a credit card provides additional protection, and it’s easier to dispute charges.

BBB encourages anyone who has encountered an online shopping scam to report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker. For more information on this and other scams, visit bbb.org.

2024 Property Assessment – You have the right to appeal.

The Jefferson County PVA will mail property assessments on April 26, 2024. The 2024 reassessment covers MLS Areas 2, 3, and 7 including areas in and around Germantown, The Highlands, Clifton, Crescent Hill, Butchertown, St. Matthews, Indian Hills, Audubon Park, Hikes Point, Jeffersontown, Fern Creek (areas east of Bardstown Road), and Fisherville. If your property value changes, you will receive a full-color assessment notice on a large postcard that includes a photo of the property and information about the assessment appeal process.  (Assessment Map - https://jeffersonpva.ky.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Areas-2_3_7-Muni-Neighb-Map.pdf

If you believe the assessed value is not correct, The Jefferson County PVA wants you to know: You have a right to appeal.

The mission of the PVA is to provide fair and equitable assessments for all property owners in Jefferson County. PVA staff works hard to get the value of our property correct. However, the PVA does not know every detail or condition of your property. If you believe the PVA assessed value does not represent the fair-market value of your property, you have a right to appeal your assessment.

To learn more about property assessments and how to file an appeal, attend one of the PVA’s upcoming community meetings:

Notice of Application for Wrecking of Historic Structure

The Office of Planning and Design Services has received a zoning change request application on which historic structures are proposed for demolition on the property listed below:
Subject Property: 3505, 3507, 3509, and 3511 Tucker Station Road
Case Number: 23-ZONE-0088
The above reference properties are listed in the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Tyler Rural Settlement District. LMCO (150.110) requires a notice of the proposed demolition be sent simultaneously with the notice for the public hearing of the zoning change request because it requires a public hearing. This dual notice commences the required 30-day hold on the properties now. The purpose of the 30-day hold is to provide time for the community to consider the demolition and, if warranted, prepare a petition to review designation of the buildings as a local landmark. This hold will expire after 4/17/2024. Once this hold has expired, a wrecking permit may be issued if the development plan showing its removal is approved and construction permits for substantial site activity are ready to be issued.
For additional information regarding this application visit the website:
https://aca-louisville.accela.com/ljcmg/Default.aspx or contact Savannah Darr, Historic Preservation Officer at 574-5705 or savannah.darr@louisvilleky.gov.
