Councilman Hudson Honors Akoy Agau for Black History Month

Akoy Agau

Councilman Jeff Hudson, Akoy Agau and Councilwoman Barbara Shanklin

Every year, the Metro Council hosts a program celebrating Black History Month. A portion of the program is dedicated to honoring recipients from each of the 26 Metro Council districts who have made an impact in the community. This year, Councilman Hudson honored Akoy Agau.

Akoy was born in South Sudan and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska.  Akoy earned a basketball scholarship to the University of Louisville where he played 3 seasons for the Cardinals.  He also attended Georgetown University and Southern Methodist University.

Akoy had the privilege of representing his birth country, Sudan on its national basketball team as they vied for a spot in the 2024 Olympics.

Akoy is currently the owner of the Derby City Distillers professional basketball team, and board member of the I Would Rather Be Reading Foundation.
