HUD-Funded Grants:

These grants are administered locally by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS). Grant activities are guided by a 5-year Consolidated Plan as well as an annual Action Plan, both of which are available online at https://louisvilleky.gov/government/housing/public-notices-federal-plans-and-project-compliance.

LMG offers multiple grant opportunities. This HUD funded grant opportunity is specifically designed to support the priorities below. 

HUD - CDBG/ESG Funding Priorities

• New partnerships providing case management and/or supportive services for LMG’s CoC-funded housing programs (note: existing partnerships funded through separate process)
• Programs designed to move people experiencing street homelessness into housing
• Programs providing 24-hour family shelter
• Programs providing 24-hour individual shelter
• Rapid re-housing providing at least 12 months of rental assistance

FY24 grantees with existing CDBG/ESG funding for program(s) that do not directly support one of the priorities above, such as day shelters or street outreach, may still submit an application for that program(s).  All new applications from previously funded grantees or first-time grantees, must meet one of the priorities above.

In FY24, RCS awarded over $3 million of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant funds to subrecipients, allocating $1,297,300 in Community Development Block Grant; $747,200 in Emergency Solution Grant; $1,533,700 in Housing Opportunities for Persons with Aids (HOPWA).

Derby City Wrestling teams up with Louisville Free Public Library for first of its kind children’s literacy event!

The Louisville Free Public Library is partnering with Derby City Wrestling to think outside the box in promoting children’s literacy. LFPL and DCW will host “Reading & Wristlocks” on Friday, March 22, 6 p.m., at the Southwest Regional Library, 9725 Dixie Highway.  This free community event will feature superstars from Derby City Wrestling reading to children, taking pictures, and signing autographs, before they lock up and square off inside the ring for a night of exciting pro wrestling action. “Early reading is critical to a child's educational success and literacy is essential to being a successful adult. Libraries bring communities together and work creatively to spark intellectual curiosity,” said Library Director Lee Burchfield. “I'm delighted to partner with DCW on this program that will bring families to the library to create positive learning experiences and memories that will last for a lifetime!” Derby City Wrestling is a weekly episodic pro wrestling television series that airs Saturday at noon on MY58 in the Louisville/Southern Indiana media market and in syndication throughout Georgia, Nevada and Arizona. It is produced by Los Angeles based David Marquez productions, an Emmy Award-winning global media company that has provided full-service television production and distribution for more than 25 years in combat sports. “When we launched Derby City last year we had a goal of being more than a television show. We like to use our platform as a vehicle to bring together, engage, and uplift the community,” DMP President David Marquez said. “When the staff at LFPL reached out, it was a quick and easy yes from us because we’re committed to the mission.” “Reading & Wristlocks” is a free, non-televised live event and space is extremely limited. Youth Spring Soccer League You can now register youth ages three to 10 for our spring soccer league! This league is only $25 per player, and games are on Saturdays from March to May. 2024 Senior Softball League It is also time to sign up for our 2024 Senior Softball League! This is for folks ages 60 and up, with a fee of $75 per player. 60-plus will play Tuesdays and 70-plus will play Thursdays. Participants will be drafted prior to the season, which s a 20-week season with a tournament. The season will begin with one practice game the week of April 22. Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format.

Grab your muck boots for this one! The streamside salamander (Ambystoma barbouri) is endemic to the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. One of their few remaining strongholds is in the wetlands of the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve!

Wild Winter Days at the Zoo continue through February 29

Winter is a great time to visit the Zoo! Visit the animals as they enjoy the cooler weather or warm up in balmy HerpAquarium and Islands areas. Wild Lights Returns to the Louisville Zoo starting March 23

The Louisville Zoo will again host its popular lantern festival, Wild Lights, March 23 through May 19. 

Wild Lights guests will venture through the Zoo’s 1.4-mile path and experience hand-crafted, illuminated art displays. The event will feature more than 60 individual displays in themed areas depicting nature, coral reefs and Chinese mythology. Select area highlights include a blooming morning glory corridor, a 23-foot-tall octopus and a walk-through phoenix tunnel. Interactive lanterns invite guests to enhance the experience by powering lantern movements, competing in games and more. This 38-night immersive event features live cultural performances including Chinese folk dances, acrobatics and more. There will also be unique handcrafted goods available for purchase along with snacks and cocktails.

The event is wheelchair and stroller-friendly on a paved path. The festival is a rain or shine event and will be held 7 to 10 p.m. Thursday through Sunday nights from March 23 to May 19. Wild Lights will also run every night during JCPS Spring Break, April 1 to 5. The Zoo will host a special preview night exclusively for Louisville Zoo members on March 22.

Tickets are available for purchase in advance online only, and children under three do not require a ticket.

The Louisville Free Public Library celebrates Black History Month with programs throughout February

The Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) continues free programs in celebration of Black History Month. Programs are designed to inform, inspire, and engage audiences of all ages. Free lifeguard training offered to future Metro Parks employees

Louisville Parks and Recreation is now hiring lifeguards for the 2024 swim season. Certification classes continue in March at the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue.

Each class costs $200 to take but is free if participants commit to working one year at a Louisville Parks and Recreation pool. Participants must be at least 15 years of age or older. The course will provide lifeguard, first aid and CPR/AED certifications.Participants must attend all classes to complete the course and receive certifications. The starting pay for the position of a Louisville Parks and Recreation lifeguard is $16.65/hour with a guarantee of 36-40 hours per week.

evolve502 scholarship applications are open

Evolve502 enrolls JCPS graduates in a two-year tuition-free postsecondary education opportunity. In the first three years evolve502 enrolled more than 1,500 JCPS graduates in college at Jefferson or Simmons College of Kentucky; 72 of those students live in District 10 and 23 of those are from the class of 2023. Creating access to postsecondary education and strengthening the workforce are critical to our community’s future success and evolve502 is working with students, families and partners every day. The application and required steps must be completed by July 15.

Crisis Component of LIHEAP continues

Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is now accepting appointments for the annual Crisis Component of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program assists income-eligible households in Jefferson County with home heating costs through March 31, or until funds are depleted. Metro Government offers free tax preparation services

The Louisville Asset Building Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provides trained, IRS-certified volunteers who offer free tax services at 15 sites across the city. VITA is available to individuals and families who earned less than $66,000 in 2023.

Since its launch in 2001, the VITA program has helped more than 143,000 Louisville tax filers. Last year, VITA volunteers processed more than 7,700 returns, adding more than $12 million to the local economy, including nearly $2 million in Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to residents.

Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. Help with prescription medication copays may be possible through the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. Call 1-800-633-8100, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Trauma-trained mental health specialists are available at all eight Louisville Neighborhood Place locations for immediate and free assistance for any Louisville resident dealing with violence or other trauma. The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

February 24 - "Reading of the Names" at St. Louis Cemetery

Ned Berghausen (a St. Agnes Catholic Church deacon and Assumption High teacher) has done extensive research on the history of Black Catholics and slavery in the archdiocese, which is how he discovered more than 1,600 free and enslaved Black people are buried at St. Louis Cemetery in unmarked graves. 

The (Un)Known Project and Center for Interfaith Relations are helping Ned and the St. Agnes Thea Bowman Society for Racial Solidarity planned this event, which will be Saturday, February 24 at 2 p.m. at the St. Louis Cemetery, 1167 Barret Avenue. 

February 24 - DIY Puppet-Making Workshop at Kentucky Science Center

Explore the mechanics of puppetry as you create a custom puppet! Saturday, February 24, 1 to 3 p.m. MakerPlace Workshops include general admission to Kentucky Science Center. Open to ages 8+. Please note that one adult is required to attend the workshop for every two children.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
