Lifeguards will have the opportunity to work at the outdoor pools in Sun Valley and Nelson Hornback (Fairdale) parks as well as the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center. The outdoor pools at Algonquin and Camp Taylor (Norton) parks will be closed during summer 2024 but are expected to reopen the following year with new renovations and water features.

Participants must attend all classes to complete the course and receive certifications. The starting pay for the position of a Louisville Parks and Recreation lifeguard is $16.65/hour with a guarantee of 36-40 hours per week.

No yard waste collection this week as winter schedule begins

This week begins the winter yard waste schedule, so there will be no yard waste collection on recycling collection weeks. Recycling AND yard waste will be collected every other week until March 11 when weekly yard waste collection resumes.

Tomorrow is last call for Christmas tree drop-off 

Saturday, January 27 is the last day to drop off Christmas trees at these Metro Public Works facilities: 

• East District Recycling Center, 595 N. Hubbards Lane
• Public Works Yard, 10500 Lower River Road (enter from Bethany Lane)
• Waste Reduction Center, 636 Meriwether Avenue 

The East District Recycling Center and Public Works Yard are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Waste Reduction Center is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. 

Metro Public Works also provides curbside pickup of Christmas trees within the Urban Services District. Trees may not be in plastic bags and all decorations must be removed. 

Residents normally serviced by private waste haulers should check with those companies to see if and when tree pickup is available.

Public Health and Wellness, young musicians and mentor team up to raise awareness of childhood lead poisoning and testing

to create more awareness around childhood lead poisoning, what it is, how to prevent it, and resources available to help families, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness (LMPHW) has partnered with IDEAS xLAB to create public health messaging that features the faces and voices of the Louisville community. The campaign, which features billboards and digital ads, was created by engaging with community residents and partners.  

At WorldFest and The Big Table, we asked attendees to respond to the prompts: “What makes a healthy home?” or “What makes a healthy community?” Participants provided over 150 responses across the two city-wide events.

Mighty Shades of Ebony – a group of talented young Louisville musicians mentored by Christopher Rasheed – took these community responses and blended them with educational information about childhood lead poisoning prevention to create the song and music video “Opened Eyes”. Adapted lyrics were taken from the song and paired with images of local families to place billboards in Louisville neighborhoods, driving viewers to the resources at StopLeadLou.com. Americana Community Center identified multiple families from the community to participate in a photoshoot for the billboards. Previous campaigns from this partnership resulted in an 80 percent increase in children being tested for lead poisoning, as well as a spike in website traffic to StopLeadLou.com, where people can access public health resources.  

Lead can enter the body when someone inhales or ingests lead particles found in paint, dust, or soil. Before 1978, lead-based paint was frequently used in homes. Many homes in Jefferson County, built before 1978, still have old lead paint in and around them. From 2005 to 2021, nearly 10,000 children in Louisville tested positive for elevated blood-lead levels. Data shows children living in the northwest area of the city are almost 10 times at greater risk for developing lead poisoning than those living in other areas. Many homes in that area were built before 1978. 

There is no safe level of lead in a person’s blood. There is also no cure for lead poisoning. When lead is breathed in or swallowed, it can result in brain and nervous system damage, behavior and learning problems, hearing and speech problems, and slow growth and development. Pregnant people need to know the risk of lead exposure because lead can pass to their baby during pregnancy and during breastfeeding. 

Lead poisoning is 100% preventable. Louisville Metro Council took a big step in late 2022 to protect children and pregnant people from lead poisoning when it approved and enacted the Lead Hazard Program for Rental Housing Units ordinance. The ordinance goes into effect in December and requires all rental housing units built before 1978 to be evaluated for lead and all lead hazards mitigated before the home is rented. Throughout 2024, LMPHW will be sharing more information and details about the implementation of the ordinance with property owners, landlords, tenants and the community.

Louisville Metro Gun Violence Dashboard now live

The city’s new “Metro Gun Violence Dashboard” is now live on OSHN’s Louisvilleky.gov website.

The dashboard is a real-time, comprehensive reporting tool that will expand government transparency and will aim to create more collaborative work opportunities with and within the Louisville community.

The dashboard is a collaborative project between OSHN and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) and was funded with a $100,000 competitive grant from the national Everytown for Safety Support Fund.

The dashboard will use data from Mark 43, LMPD’s record management system and will show a variety of reporting elements. For example, it will show maps and trends on where shots are fired, where homicides and non-fatal shootings happen, literal neighborhood and block reports, and historic, comparative, and detailed data starting from the year 2010.

It will give anonymized information on victims of gun violence, trend reports and provides an array of measurements, including, for example, what is shown as the likeliest or most common times and/or days for violence.

Join us at either location on Wednesday, February 7 to review the map, learn more about the project, talk with city planners, and provide feedback: 

• 1 to 3  p.m. at the Western Library (604 S. 10^th Street)
• 6 to 8 p.m. at the Newburg Library (4800 Exeter Ave)

The Office of Planning is working with national planning and urban design firm Opticos Design to create this priority land use map. As Louisville Metro strives to increase housing choice and opportunity, this map will further assist in guiding the location of mixed-use and mixed-housing developments across all communities.

evolve502 scholarship applications are open

Evolve502 enrolls JCPS graduates in a two-year tuition-free postsecondary education opportunity. In the first three years evolve502 enrolled more than 1,500 JCPS graduates in college at Jefferson or Simmons College of Kentucky; 72 of those students live in District 10 and 23 of those are from the class of 2023. Creating access to postsecondary education and strengthening the workforce are critical to our community’s future success and evolve502 is working with students, families and partners every day. The application and required steps must be completed by July 15.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format.

Grab your muck boots for this one! The streamside salamander (Ambystoma barbouri) is endemic to the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. One of their few remaining strongholds is in the wetlands of the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve!

Led by our naturalist, Jacob, participants on this hike will venture into the wetlands of the Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve to search for salamanders. Discover what makes these important habitats so special, and maybe get a little muddy while you’re at it!

Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. Help with prescription medication copays may be possible through the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program. Call 1-800-633-8100, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Trauma-trained mental health specialists are available at all eight Louisville Neighborhood Place locations for immediate and free assistance for any Louisville resident dealing with violence or other trauma. Appointments and walk-ins are accepted. The city has also set up a trauma hotline that is free to call: 901-0100.

LMPD - which numbers to call for emergencies, non-emergencies, and ongoing criminal activity complaints

The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Clearing bench warrants and giving people the opportunity to close their cases will reduce incarceration and save lives. Bench warrants are typically issued after a person does not appear for a scheduled court appearance or does not pay fines, fees, or restitution.

Many people miss court dates because of barriers to transportation, childcare, time off work, and more. When a person has an active bench warrant, police are authorized to arrest them if they come into contact with the person. That means getting pulled over for speeding could lead to an arrest and incarceration. 

On a personal level, this amnesty period will allow people with certain active bench warrants to reschedule their hearings and close their case. This will allow them to live without the threat of immediate arrest should they encounter law enforcement. On a broader scale, clearing these bench warrants will reduce incarceration rates and alleviate deadly overcrowding in jails.

Wellspring Clients Art Show through January 28

Artists with unique backgrounds are about to enter the local spotlight. More than a dozen clients from Wellspring’s Art Therapy programs will be featured in Mellwood Art Center’s  Pigment Gallery throughout the month of January. The artists come from a variety of 
backgrounds, and most have experienced some form of trauma, and all are diagnosed with a
mental illness.

Wellspring is a Louisville nonprofit that provides behavioral health services, affordable housing,
and crisis stabilization services for adults with mental illness. Wellspring’s Licensed Professional Art Therapist, Kathleen Garcia, works with hundreds of clients each year. She says showcasing clients’ art in a professional gallery illuminates the power of expression, especially for some people who may not otherwise be able to describe their emotions.

The client Art Show is made possible with grant funds from The Snowy Owl Foundation.
Mellwood’s Pigment Gallery (1860 Mellwood Ave.) will display the Wellspring client art through January 28. Items are for sale and clients receive 70 percent of the sale price.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
