MetroSafe hiring next generation of 911 telecommunicators

$8,000 hiring incentive available upon successful completion of academy.  MetroSafe, the city’s 911 hub, is seeking to train and hire its next generation of 911 Telecommunicators. 911 Call Takers and Dispatchers are the first first responders when an emergency strikes. MetroSafe today announced applications are being accepted for the upcoming training academy. “911 is the lifeline our residents call when they need help. Our telecommunicators provide lifesaving instruction to those in their darkest hour as well as celebratory milestones like helping deliver a baby,” said Jody Meiman, Executive Director, Louisville Metro Emergency Services. MetroSafe, along with 911 call centers across the country, is experiencing staffing challenges and anticipating a wave of retirements from telecommunicators who have been dedicated public safety servants for decades. “Over the past thirty years, I’ve seen the technology and resources evolve to better rapidly get help to residents in need,” said Viola Brown, MetroSafe Dispatcher, who will mark her 30th anniversary this month. “Having a career in 911 is challenging but fulfilling, and I’m proud to mark this milestone and continue to serve residents and first responders.” Currently, the center is short dozens of positions. MetroSafe has seven trainees in training who will be added to the current work force upon completion. In a report released this summer, NENA, the national 9-1-1 Association, cited 82 percent of 911 centers as being understaffed and data showed a growing shortfall in younger workers to replace those who are retiring or burning out. “We’re seeking quick thinkers who are able to adapt well to rapidly changing situations,” Meiman said. “If you like an exciting, fast-paced environment and work well under pressure, a career in 911 may be for you.” 911 Telecommunications is a public safety position that involves taking critical 911 calls from the public, which includes calls such as cardiac arrests of persons including children and infants, working fires with victims trapped inside, shootings and auto accidents. After the application period, trainees will be selected to go through a 180-hour, paid training academy held primarily during daytime hours (8 a.m. – 4 p.m.). Trainees receive $22.31/hour for the duration of the training. The hiring process includes a civil service testing, a criminal background check, a panel interview and job shadow, and suitability training. Upon successful completion, trainees will be granted full-time employment with MetroSafe starting at $24.48/hour for Call Takers or $27.25 for Dispatchers and will be paired with a trainer who will instruct and monitor the trainee’s progress. Louisville Metro offers an $8,000 public safety hiring incentive paid in installments upon hiring. Additionally, MetroSafe trainees and employees have access to an on-staff licensed clinical professional counselor for voluntary trauma-focused therapy and access to a gym with equipment donated by Planet Fitness. No prior experience in public safety is needed. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or equivalent and not been convicted of a felony. High school seniors who are at least 18 years of age and anticipating graduation in 2023 are welcome to apply. To be eligible for the academy, applicants must also pass a pre-employment drug screening and a polygraph test. Transportation Cabinet reminds public of $5,000 reward for help in catching copper wire thieves pillaging highway lights

Criminal destruction hampers safety, costs taxpayers hundreds of thousands for repairs The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is reminding the public of the reward being offered in the battle against thieves who are continuing to steal copper wire from interstate highway lighting systems. Thefts in District 5 have occurred within spans along most major interstates, with the Louisville Metro area being impacted especially hard by the heists. The offer of $5,000 for information leading to arrests and prosecution of the thieves, whose crimes have caused $750,000 in damages, is still being offered. KYTC is partnering with the Kentucky Department of Homeland Security and the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) to spread the word that copper wire theft from highway lights endangers the public, puts motorists at risk, and costs Kentucky taxpayers. The thieves also run a risk: high voltage in the lines could result in electrocution. State and local officials are seeking help from the public to identify these persons or anyone else suspected of stealing copper wire on Kentucky highways. Kentuckians can contact the following resources: Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the reward. Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement (LMPD) by calling 502-574-LMPD (5673) or by utilizing the online crime tip portal. Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC.  While copper wire theft also occurs on private property, interstate and highway lighting systems are often targets. In 2014, a rash of copper wire thefts occurred along interstates and parkways in central Kentucky. A $2,500 reward was offered by KYTC and Kentucky State Police, prompting an informant to come forward. Two residents of Clark County ultimately were arrested, indicted and pleaded guilty to a combination of misdemeanor and felony theft charges.  Culprits break into lighting systems and junction boxes to pull, cut and strip the wires. They often look to sell the scrap metal to recycling facilities in and out of the state. With damage exceeding $3,000, the thief or thieves could face Class D felony charges, which carry possible prison sentences of five to 10 years. To deter theft, state law requires recycling centers to obtain identification of sellers and a certified statement as to the sources of the scrap metal being sold.

Louisville Metro remains committed to providing mobility options that meet our community’s evolving needs in a changing world. Technologies around bike-share programs are rapidly evolving in cities everywhere. Early registration for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program now open through October 31

Seniors and disabled people on fixed incomes can apply early for LIHEAP and MSD’s Senior Citizen Discount Program The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS) is offering pre-registration for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), Fall Subsidy Component, through October 31 or until appointments reach capacity. Pre-registration is for Jefferson County residents, within 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, who are 60 years of age or older, or are disabled and receiving a fixed income (Social Security, SSI, pension or Black Lung benefits). The toll-free automated appointment system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to schedule an in-person appointment at one of seven locations. The online automated scheduler will provide details about these locations as well as eligibility and required documentation, or call 991-8391. Additionally, through partnership with the Louisville Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD), eligible residents will have the opportunity to apply for a discount on their water bill through MSD’s Senior Citizen Discount Program. Customers 65 or older with a gross annual household income of $35,000 or less, may be eligible to receive a 30 percent discount on the wastewater portion of their bill. Residents who received assistance in 2022 under MSD’s Senior Citizen Discount Program do NOT need to reapply this year – their enrollment in the program will continue for 2023.  Eligible households can apply for one or both LIHEAP Subsidy and the MSD’s Senior Discount Program with one single appointment. MSD clients who do not meet the age requirements or other eligibility for the Senior Citizen Discount Program may still be eligible for EWRAP, which provides a 30 percent discount on MSD wastewater charges to customers within 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Income-eligible residents who do not meet the requirements for LIHEAP pre-registration (who are not elderly or disabled and on a fixed income) may still apply for LIHEAP benefits beginning November 6, with appointments taken in advance starting November 2.

Bissell Pet Foundation's Empty the Shelters event at LMAS through October 15

With animal shelters across the nation facing an overcrowding crisis, thousands of highly adoptable pets are waiting for their second chances. Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is proud to partner with BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, for its Fall National “Empty the Shelters.”

Through October 15, BISSELL Pet Foundation will sponsor reduced adoption fees of $50 or less at more than 345 shelters in 42 states, LMAS will participate, offering waived adoption fees for all pets!

Community members are invited to #yourcityshelter to adopt dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies for free! They can view adoptable pets via our website.

Established in 2016, Empty the Shelters has helped nearly 190,000 pets find their loving families at participating shelters in 49 states and Canada. 

Louisville Metro Animal Services waiving redemption fees through the end of December

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is waiving reclamation fees for owned pets through the end of the year. LMAS seeks to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder the reunification of beloved companions with their families. Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees. Court fees will not be waived. Redemption fees are set by the Louisville Animal Ordinance. Local animal laws also require pets to be licensed, microchipped, and spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter.  Pet owners may visit the shelter, at 3528 Newburg Road, Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m., to reclaim their companion animals. The shelter's dedicated staff members will be available to guide owners through the reclamation process, providing support and assistance every step of the way.

Sidewalk over Goldsmith Lane bridge near Peabody Lane closed due to safety concerns

The sidewalk over the bridge structure on Goldsmith Lane near Peabody is closed until further notice. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspection revealed safety concerns and closing the sidewalk will allow the driving lanes to remain open at this time.  The next steps will be to investigate and design a repair or replacement of the structure. Please watch for signage and use extra caution in the area.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

Through October 29 - Boo at the Zoo is 42, still merry, not scary! 

The Louisville Zoo’s ever-popular annual Boo at the Zoo is celebrating 42 years of merry not scary fun! This beloved event runs through October 29, Thursday through Sunday nights. Tickets are all-inclusive and include Boo at the Zoo admission, parking, Spooktacular Carousel, “not-so-itsy-bitsy” Spider House and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow attraction. Guests can dress up in their wildest costumes for the after-hours event that turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life. There will be music, photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under.  Members and guests can purchase tickets online at louisvillezoo.org/boo, with their chosen date and arrival time. Ticket capacity is limited each night with popular nights expected to sell out quickly. October 19 is Allergy-Friendly Night. Boo at the Zoo is a rain or shine event and provides critical support every year to the Zoo’s animal care programs, visitor experience and conservation education. New My Louisville Home strategy to spur housing development, seeking feedback

My Louisville Home is a comprehensive housing strategy that aims to create and preserve 15,000 affordable housing units unveiled by Mayor Craig Greenberg on October 2. This strategy, the first of its kind in Louisville, outlines significant investment and policy actions by Louisville Metro Government to spur housing development across the city. 

My Louisville Home will achieve its ambitious target by implementing a series of strategies and initiatives, including key components: revision of the land development code, increased funding and expansion of the Louisville Housing Trust Fund, implement innovative financing and construction methods, create long term affordable housing homeownership opportunities, incentivize the renovation of vacant and abandoned properties for affordable housing, and create a Lien Forgiveness in Exchange for Affordability Program.

Applications are open for the 2024 Class of Office for Women Ambassador Program

The Office for Women is pleased to announce that applications are open for the 2024 Class of Office for Women Ambassador Program.

The Office for Women Ambassadors is a six-month training program for women and gender diverse individuals who represent the diverse communities across Metro Louisville. Through the program, participants will develop and hone their leadership skills, learn about issues impacting women, and explore government and community programs available to women. The OFW Ambassadors will serve as community liaisons, sharing out information about vital community services and communicating back to government about the needs of women in their communities.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to and advocacy for improving the lives of women and/or girls and advancing gender equity. Applicants must be 18 or older. Applicants must live in one of the 26 Metro Council districts in Jefferson County (inside Jefferson County).

Applicants must commit to attending all training sessions. The training dates for 2024 are: January 25, February 22, March 28, April 25, May 23 and July 11 and training will take place from approximately 8:30-4:30 each day. The training program is free, and food and transportation costs (bus tickets or parking) will be provided. Childcare will also be provided off site. Applications are due by November 15. Light Up Louisville date moved to Saturday, December 2; sign up is open for Light Up Louisville Parade entries

Light Up Louisville has moved from the Friday after Thanksgiving to Saturday, December 2, the Saturday the week after Thanksgiving.  The event will include the Lots of Lights Parade, Vendor Village, Children's Wonderland Workshop and free photos with Santa.  Join the parade Sign up is now open for participation in the Lots of Lights Parade. People can sign up as individuals or as a group.

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division's ‘Mulch Mondays':  Any Jefferson County resident or nonprofit organization will be able to pick up natural, dye-free mulch at no cost between 1 and 3 p.m. every Monday in the parking lot directly behind 9200 Whipps Mill Road. Those interested in picking up free mulch are required to bring their own container for transport. Park Duvalle Community Health Centers again offering seasonal flu vaccines at no cost to uninsured people

Each year Park DuValle Community Health Center organizes a mass vaccination initiative to protect the Louisville metro from influenza, hosting walk-in flu clinics and providing thousands of flu vaccines at no cost. This fall, PDCHC is adjusting flu clinics operations to increase capacity flow by serving the community at all PDCHC locations, including at Newburg at 3828 Bardstown Road. As student loan repayments resume, the Louisville Financial Empowerment Center offers options for borrowers

Kentucky's New Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

Kentucky has launched an innovative new program to assist working families with the cost of child care and help employers attract and retain talent. The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible child care providers. Various program restrictions apply. The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Trauma-trained mental health specialists are now available at all eight Louisville Neighborhood Place locations for immediate and free assistance for any Louisville resident dealing with violence or other trauma. Appointments and walk-ins are accepted.

The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

28th Annual Garvin Gate Blues Festival starts this evening!

Join in an outdoor two-day celebration of blues and the arts at the 28th Annual Garvin Gate Blues Festival starting tonight, and continuing tomorrow. 

This is a free arts and music event featuring national and local performances. The festival is located at Oak Street and Garvin Place, between 4th and 6th Streets in historic Old Louisville. In addition to live music and entertainment, there will also be a variety of food and drink vendors.

About the Garvin Gate Blues Festival

The festival grew from outdoor jam sessions in the parking lot of the Rudyard Kipling in 1988. The music became popular, and the neighborhood wanted to expand the event. At the same time, the Garvin Gate Association enlarged their boundaries and reformed as the Garvin Gate Neighborhood Association. They were looking to host an annual event, and the partnership was created. Now 28 years strong, the festival attracts a multiracial and intergeneration audience.

Through October 31 - Jack o' Lantern Spectacular 

Billed as the Region's Best Halloween Event, the Jack o' Lantern Spectacular returns to Iroquois Park October 3 to 31. Guests are treated to an organic art gallery of more than 5,000 artistically carved pumpkins in themed settings.  This family-friendly event has become an annual tradition for thousands who come back year after year to experience a variety of carved pumpkins and themed vignettes set to music. Buy tickets online. The time on your ticket is the start of the one-hour time slot during which you will enter the Amphitheater. Guests can choose from several one-hour time slots to view the show, except for the final time slot each day. The final slot on Sunday through Thursday enters the Amphitheater between 9:30 and 10:00 (when the gate closes), and the final slot on Friday and Saturday enters between 10:30 and 11:00 (when the gate closes). It is recommended you purchase your tickets in advance as time slots will sell out.

October 14 - Mayor's Southwest Fun Run

The Mayor's Southwest Fun Run will be Saturday, October 14 at 8 a.m. This 5K scenic loop will take walkers and runners around the Farnsley-Moremen Landing. Registration is $25 per person and net race proceeds support the Farnsley-Moremen Landing. Post-event festivities to follow at Southwest Fest. Tree planting season begins in October, and Louisville Urban Forestry has several opportunities for the community to get involved with efforts to plant new trees and maintain ones already planted. No experience is needed for Urban Forestry events, and all tools are provided. The big highlight of this year’s tree planting season is that Louisville Urban Forestry will host five large-scale community plantings. These plantings bring businesses, organizations and individuals together as volunteers to plant hundreds of trees at once in a particular area. This includes one community wide planting day in partnership with TreesLouisville, two neighborhood tree plantings, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Planting and TreeFest. Throughout Tree Planting season, Louisville Urban Forestry will also be hosting Community Forester Trainings, which offer in-depth information on the best practices for planting trees. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. Would you like to serve on one of Louisville Metro's Boards or Commissions? 

Are you interested in volunteering?  Louisville Metro Government has more than 70 boards and commissions - everything from the board of the Louisville Water Company to Metro Parks to the Louisville Planning Commission. We are always in search of citizens willing to serve on boards. Most boards are voluntary-based and are not paid but the reward of serving pays big dividends to our community.
