Learn digital skills through the Digital Literacy Train the Trainer program

The University of Louisville’s Digital Transformation Center is honored to be a part of the Healthcare Workforce Innovation Coalition, funded by Metro Louisville’s American Rescue Plan grant. This group is led by CEO^c, the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council, and their Health Career Lab, to create a digital workforce train the trainer program, expanding the digital skills of our community. We will upskill 100+ community trainers throughout all 26 districts. In turn, those 100 trainers will train within their community, producing more digitally upskilled and reskilled citizens.

The coalition is looking for 20 diverse committed community members from each district to foster an equitable digital environment. No individuals from District 10 have applied.

Community trainers will be empowered with free training, free curriculum, materials, and support through areas of digital literacy such as data analytics, ChatGPT, conversational artificial intelligence, and forms creation/data collection. Plus, a $500 stipend upon completion of the first community training they conduct.

Take the Louisville Food Vision2030 community food survey and help shape the strategic plan

With support from a USDA Regional Food System Partnership Grant, Food in Neighborhoods is working with Louisville residents to develop the Food Vision 2030. As part of this process, Food in Neighborhoods will be engaging community voices in various ways, including food summits, stakeholder focus groups, and distribution of a community food survey.

Through participatory data collection and assessment processes, we will identify needs, gaps, threats, strengths, and opportunities in Louisville’s local-regional food system, specifically those related to food-insecure populations, food system infrastructure and value chains, and production sustainability. District 10 youth needed for the YES! Youth Cabinet, apply by Sept. 4

The Metro Youth Cabinet (MYC) is full of civic-minded change makers interested in helping local youth gain greater equity and a stronger voice on issues and policy that affect them.

The Cabinet’s hub is in the YES! Youth Engagement Services division at OSHN. The 26-member Cabinet works directly with Louisville’s Mayor and Metro Council to offer advice on policy, community building and equity. The cabinet will work to identify and transform systems that prevent young people – throughout our city – from living healthy and happy lives. Hikes Lane Rehabilitation project continues

The map above shows the Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project detour for Phase 5. 

The Hikes Lane Pavement Rehabilitation project continues. The federally funded project mostly includes repairing/replacing concrete pavement, improving curb ramps and sidewalks to make them ADA compliant. Construction costs are estimated to be $7,000,000. Work on the 2.7-mile corridor is anticipated to be completed by late October. 

Phase 5 continues, with the construction zone between Ross Boulevard and Youngwood Road.

Sidewalk over Goldsmith Lane bridge near Peabody Lane closed due to safety concerns

The sidewalk over the bridge structure on Goldsmith Lane near Peabody is closed until further notice. A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspection revealed safety concerns and closing the sidewalk will allow the driving lanes to remain open at this time.  The next steps will be to investigate and design a repair or replacement of the structure. Please watch for signage and use extra caution in the area.

Monthly Food Pantry at St Agnes Parish in partnership with Dare to Care

The monthly Food Pantry at St. Agnes Parish, in partnership with Dare to Care, distributes food to approximately 150 guest families the fourth Saturday of each month. The pantry operates from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and is open to all Louisville residents. Guests are served via a drive-through format and all Pantry volunteers are prescreened and wear masks as per CDC guidelines.

September 9 - Louisville Zoo Wildlife Photography class

The Louisville Zoo will again offer the popular Wildlife Photography Basics class on September 9. The one-day course is presented in partnership with Murphy’s Camera. Participants will learn the building blocks of great Zoo wildlife photography. Zoo staff will lend their expert advice on what animal behaviors to look for as well as the best times and seasons to photograph different species. Murphy’s Camera experts will advise on the basics of framing a shot and practical methods for taking advantage of available light. The class meets from 9 to 11 a.m. and is designed for teens and adults eager to learn the basics of wildlife photography. The September 9 class features the Islands area with views of the little penguins, dalmatian pelicans, Aldabra tortoises, and rotational islands mammals which could include Sumatran tiger, orangutans, babirusa, tapir and siamangs. Registration is open: $60 for non-members and $40 for members and includes all-day Zoo admission.

Through September 17 - Connect with Nature Brick by Brick at the Zoo

Louisville Zoo visitors can enjoy brand new larger-than-life sculptures in Sean Kenney’s Nature Connects® exhibit made with LEGO bricks through September 17.

The exhibit includes 15 sculptures including an 83-inch-tall moth orchid, a 77-inch-tall goldfinch, a 60-inch-tall snail on a mushroom and a 76-inch-tall hummingbird. The art is made from more than 203,000 LEGO bricks. Nature Connects is free with Louisville Zoo admission or membership.

LMAS, Friends of Metro Animal Services offering three months of waived reclaim fees for lost pets through September 15

Now through September 15, owners can reclaim their lost pets without incurring the usual reclamation fees, including boarding charges, vaccinations, and microchipping. The aim is to alleviate the burden on individuals and families who may be facing financial hardship, ensuring that no pet remains separated from its rightful home due to economic disparities. Redemption fees will only be waived for pet owners with no previous violations, and cover microchipping, licensing, and vaccination fees. Court fees will not be waived. LMAS will not keep a pet impounded due to its owner’s inability to pay and will work with owners who have outstanding balances and want to reclaim their pet. LMAS thanks their non-profit partners, Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS) for providing the necessary funding to make the three-month redemption period possible.

Foster Grandparents head back to Louisville classrooms

It’s a new school year and in classrooms all across Jefferson County, volunteers in the Foster Grandparent Program will be making a difference in the lives of children, just as they have for more than 50 years. 

The Foster Grandparent Program – funded by AmeriCorps Seniors and operated by Metro RCS – is an opportunity for older people (ages 55 and up) to work part-time in local classrooms mentoring children from preschool age all the way up through high school. Foster grandparents usually work one-on-one with the students they are assigned, focusing on core projects like improving literacy or social skills. 

Volunteers with the RCS Foster Grandparent Program gathered at the Edison Center earlier this month for a back-to-school meeting. This group represents only some of the dozens of incredible mentors that spend some of their time with young people every week, serving as role models and friends.

“Usually, foster grandparents are assigned children who need extra help and support,” says Outreach and Advocacy Manager Sarah Teeters. “If a child needs a little more one-on-one attention, they can be partnered with a foster grandparent for a little more stability and nurturing.”

Volunteers in the Foster Grandparent Program are able to set their own schedule. They can work up to 40 hours per week in the classroom, although the average is around 20 hours a week. FGP volunteers are paid a stipend for their work, as well as compensation for meals and transportation.

There are around 60 foster grandparents enrolled in the program currently but Teeters says that number could be much higher, as the program has capacity for around 110 volunteers. 

Teeters says the experience of being a foster grandparent is rewarding for both the students and the volunteers. 

“When you look at the statistics for active and successful aging, the two biggest factors are intergenerational socialization and purposeful lives, so this really meets both of those,” says Teeters. “It gives older adults a sense of purpose, a routine. You get to see these children you’ve been working with and you get to see their progress. The intergenerational part is very important for both sides.”

The Crescent Hill Community Council is sponsoring a “Curbing Gun Violence in Jefferson County Competition"

A $6,100 prize (and possibly climbing) will be awarded for the best new idea, or a new twist on an old idea to curb gun violence in Jefferson County. HOW: Each idea must be submitted in accordance to the “Rules for Submission” below, and accompanied with the Official Submission Form attached. Additional forms can be obtained in person at the Crescent Hill Branch Library, 2762 Frankfort Avenue. WHEN: Entries will be accepted until midnight Wednesday, October 4. A  $6,100 prize will be awarded January 4. RULES FOR SUBMISSION 1) Your ideas for curbing gun violence in Jefferson County must be typed with minimum 10 point font and no more than one page total, or 500 words in length. 2) The winning idea should include three action steps to implement the idea. 3) The winning idea must be “do-able” with the resources available in Jefferson County. 4) The winning idea may be a new idea, or a fresh look at an old idea. 5) Any person from anywhere, and of any age can win. Southwest YMCA early learning program begins September 5

Register now for the Southwest YMCA’s new Early Learning Readiness Program for caregivers and children ages 0 to 5 years old. This program runs from September 5 to December 7, and it is provided at no charge to participants.  All participants will receive a year-long YMCA membership and weekly learning sessions with other caregivers and children to learn together through stories, songs, and fun outdoor activities. The Louisville Youth Orchestra (LYO) is kicking off its 65th season of working with student musicians from across the community. The LYO serves more than 250 students through eight ensembles that serve a wide range of skill levels from beginner to advanced and nearly everything in between. Through August 31 - Teens can use Planet Fitness locations for free

Now through August 31, teens 14-19 can use any of the 21 Louisville & Southern Indiana Planet Fitness locations for free through the High School Summer Pass program. Teens can enroll electronically (with parent or guardian e-signature). In 2022, more than four million teens across 2,400 PF locations nationwide took advantage of High School Summer Pass.

Employers & Employees Now Eligible for the Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership –(ECCAP)

Kentucky has launched an innovative new program to assist working families with the cost of childcare and help employers attract and retain talent. The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully contribute financial assistance directly to employee childcare costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. 

For example, if an employer commits $100 per month to their employees' childcare expenses, the state may match that contribution up to another $100, giving employees a total of up to $200 in childcare assistance. All funds from the employer and the state are paid directly to eligible childcare providers, who are included in this database. Various program restrictions apply. Enrollment for LIHEAP Summer Subsidy is open

The Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services is taking applications for the 2023 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy Cooling Component and the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP). These federally-funded programs are designed to help offset the cost of higher utility bills. Applications will be accepted through September 22 or until funds are depleted. Applicants for the LIHEAP Summer Subsidy and LIHWAP program must be residents of Jefferson County with a household income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (e.g. for a household of four, the gross monthly income cannot exceed $3,750). The LIHEAP Summer Subsidy component provides households a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Residents can apply regardless of the status of their utility bills. The benefit amount is paid directly to the electric vendor (i.e. LG&E). The Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP program, also provides a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $100 depending on income levels. Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division offering free  ‘Mulch Mondays’ 

Louisville Parks and Recreation’s Urban Forestry division's ‘Mulch Mondays':  Any Jefferson County resident or nonprofit organization will be able to pick up natural, dye-free mulch at no cost between 1 and 3 p.m. every Monday in the parking lot directly behind 9200 Whipps Mill Road. Those interested in picking up free mulch are required to bring their own container for transport. Participants will be required to fill out a waiver before receiving mulch.

Help with prescription medication copays

If you are struggling to pay for your prescriptions, the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program may be able to help. Call the Kentucky Prescription Assistance Program (KPAP) Hotline at 1-800-633-8100, available from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. LMPD - which numbers to call for emergencies, non-emergencies, and ongoing criminal activity complaints

The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

While many organizations have spent a significant amount of time working with the court system, we are reaching out to new organizations that provide services to youth and may want to become involved with receiving referrals from the Court. If you know any organization that may want to introduce themselves, inform us about what they can offer to reduce recidivism, and educate us on how they would like to receive referrals, please share this information with them. Our goal is to leave no stone unturned in the pursuit of alleviating harmful behaviors and eliminating systemic barriers for youth. 

The Jefferson Juvenile Summit is August 30 from noon to 3 p.m. at Jefferson County Judicial Center, 700 West Jefferson, in the Jury Pool Room on the second floor.

Featuring soloists Emily Albrink, Chad Sloan, Erin Alcorn, Tristan Tournaud and a 25-piece orchestra under the direction of Joseph Rubin for a night of music under the stars!

September 10 - cycLOUvia Three Points

CycLOUvia is coming back to Three Points Louisville.

We will be transforming the Three Points Loop (Goss Avenue, Logan Street, and Shelby Street, between Texas Avenue and Kentucky Street), into a paved park on Sunday, September 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. Walk, bike, dance, or skate through some of Louisville’s great urban neighborhoods—sans cars! This event is free, fun, and family-friendly.

Be on the lookout for new murals coming to the Three Points intersection in the coming weeks. CycLOUvia will coincide with the 2Buck Invitational happening that weekend.

The following streets will be closed from noon to 6 p.m. on September 10:

 Locate legal Short Term Rentals with new interactive map

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators. An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb. If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County.  Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical. Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans. For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.
