Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! It’s hard to believe July is quickly drawing to a close, and kids will be getting ready for school again in short order!

This week, Metro Council resumed committee meetings after our summer break. I'm looking forward to a busy second half of the year. As you know, the first half of the year ended with us unanimously passing a budget that makes significant investments across our community impacting public safety, infrastructure, and general quality of life. However, passing the budget is only part of the battle. The real work starts now as the burden shifts to the administration putting these funds to work. In the past, there have been times where we've seen long delays between policy and action (as an example, the improvements to Westport Road were approved a few years before the work actually happened!). The mayor and I have discussed this issue. I believe he understands the need for urgency and is working hard to fill key positions that will ensure projects are started as quickly as possible. To that end, I am happy to report that the contractor is already working on final design plans for the multi-use path along Freys Hill Road, and the contract for the walking path in Berrytown Park should be awarded any day now.

In other news, I want to extend my congratulations to (now permanent) Chief Jackie Gwinn-Villaroel on the removal of her interim title. I have been very impressed with the chief over the past several months and think she will be an excellent leader for our police department. The chief was gracious enough to attend one of my coffee meetings earlier this year. Everyone I spoke with was impressed with her command of the issues, understanding of how to address the challenges, and general approach to policing. This is arguably the single most important position in city government. Having a permanent chief in this role will help bring certainty to the department. She has done an outstanding job over the past six months or so, but I am sure it is difficult to drive significant strategic change when people aren’t sure you're going to be there more than a few months. I hope you will join me in supporting Chief Gwinn-Villaroel and her officers as they work to improve public safety in our community.

I hope you have a great weekend. If my office can be of service, don’t hesitate to reach out.

The next meeting of the commission will be at Eastern High School on Monday, July 24 beginning at 6 p.m. Those who wish to speak can sign up as early as 5:30 p.m. Click here for more information, including videos and minutes of previous meetings.
