In 2024 people with Medicare may qualify for even more savings through the Extra Help program. This program helps some people pay their Medicare drug coverage (Part D) costs, like premiums, deductibles, coinsurance, and other costs. In 2024, the program will expand and you may qualify.

How does Extra Help lower my costs?

In 2024, everyone who qualifies for Extra Help will pay:
• $0 for your Medicare drug plan premium.
• $0 for your plan deductible.
• A reduced amount for both generic and brand-name drugs.
If you get any level of Extra Help now, and meet the qualifications for next year, you’ll get these cost savings automatically—you don’t need to reapply.

How do I find out if I qualify for Extra Help?

In most cases, you must live in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia, and have income and resources below a certain limit. The income limit is based on your income
from the previous year.

• Your annual income must be below $21,870 for an individual, or $29,580 for a married couple in 2023.
• Your resources must be below $16,600 for an individual, or $33,240 for a married couple in 2023.

o Resources include money in a checking, savings, or retirement account, stocks, and bonds. Resources don’t include your home, one car, burial plots, up to $1,500 for burial expenses if you’ve put that money aside, furniture, and other household and personal items
These limits can change each year. Even if you don’t qualify for Extra Help now, you can reapply for Extra Help any time, if your income and resources change.

How do I apply for Extra Help?

Some people qualify automatically, but if you don’t, it’s easy to apply for Extra Help:

• Visit Social Security online at ssa.gov/extrahelp
• Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-325-0778.

After you apply, Social Security will review your application and send you a letter to let you know if you qualify for Extra Help. Once you qualify, you can choose a Medicare
Low-income Subsidy drug plan. If you qualify for Extra Help and don’t select a plan, Medicare will select a
plan for you.

Where can I get more information?

• Visit Social Security at ssa.gov/extrahelp or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778) if you have questions about the Extra Help program or need help filling out the application.
• Visit Medicare.gov/extrahelp or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to learn about Medicare drug plans, Extra Help, and other ways to lower your prescription drug costs. TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.

Advanced Planning for People Living with Dementia

Advance planning empowers people to make their own decisions about important topics like finances, health care, and living arrangements before the need arises. Despite this, most older adults have not created advance directives.

The following advance planning guides were created to support people living with dementia and their family members or other care partners in knowing what to plan for and how to get started.

The guides cover four topics:

1) health care planning

2) financial planning

3) care planning

4) supporting someone living with dementia in making decisions.

Grant Application

Funding Opportunity

Employment of People with Disabilities

Applications Due: July 31st

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced a new funding opportunity for conducting interventional research to support its programs. They seek applications for research to be conducted under five priority areas:

  • Eliminating the structural barriers for people with disabilities in the labor market, particularly for people of color and other underserved communities, that increase the likelihood of people receiving or applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
  • Increasing employment and self-sufficiency of individuals with disabilities, including people of color and underserved communities (whether beneficiaries, applicants, or potential applicants of the SSDI or SSI programs).
  • Coordinating planning between private and public human services agencies to improve the administration and effectiveness of the SSDI, SSI, and related programs.
  • Assisting claimants in underserved communities to apply for or appeal decisions on claims for SSDI and SSI benefits.
  • Conducting outreach to people with disabilities who are potentially eligible to receive SSI.

SSA intends the projects to have a project period of up to five years, with the first year intended to put any necessary data agreements into place, recruit additional partners, and conduct any other implementation planning activities. If the project is able to meet these milestones in the first year, funding may be continued to field and evaluate the project for up to four years. If you have difficulty accessing the full announcement electronically, please contact Grants.gov at 800-518-4726 or support@grants.gov.

The Three Legs of the Stool: A Framework for Person-Centered Community Mental Health Services That Do No Harm

This webinar will showcase a framework for community mental health services developed by the Ashland County, Ohio Mental Health and Recovery Board. Using a three-legged stool model, the Mental Health and Recovery Board has operationalized person-centered practices throughout the County service system. The primary principle of the framework is borrowed from the Hippocratic Oath: Do no harm. The three legs, or sets of values, are: 1) Recovery and Resiliency, 2) Trauma-Informed Care, and 3) Medication Optimization. In this webinar hosted by the National Center on Advancing Person-Centered Practices and Systems (NCAPPS), a panel of current and past leadership and people with lived experience of community mental health services in Ashland County will tell the story of how the framework’s principles and values have been operationalized. Panelists will provide information and inspiration for advocates, administrators, and service providers interested in how community mental health services can promote quality of life and wellbeing at the local level.

Let's Explore the Emergence of Artificial Intelligence Work Tools

Come join DETAC as we begin a dialogue to examine the new frontier of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the potential opportunities and challenges within the labor force for people with disabilities. New AI features and products such as Virtual Reality (VR) have the potential to increase accessibility both within the workforce and our communities. At the same time, there are concerns surfacing about new tools not being designed for people with disabilities in mind and safeguarding privacy. In collaboration with ODEP who funds the Partnership on Employment and Accessible Technology (PEAT) and a guest speaker from the field of AI (Floreo), we will explore new tools that are changing the way we interact with the world and how it could shape the future of work for people with disabilities.
