Coffee With Your Councilman - February 22

LMPD Chief

Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel joined the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2021 as Deputy Chief after more than 20 years with the Atlanta Police Department.

My next "Coffee with your Councilman" will be Wednesday, February 22 at 9 a.m. at the Sawyer Hayes Community Center, 2201 Lakeland Road. Interim Chief of Police Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel will be our featured guest. If you haven't attended one of our coffee meetings before, they are great opportunities to hear what's going on in metro government and share any concerns or questions you have.

WHEN: Wednesday, February 22 at 9 a.m.

WHERE: Sawyer Hayes Community Center, 2201 Lakeland Road

We've had a few police-related questions come up at recent coffee meetings, so I'm grateful that Chief Gwinn-Villaroel has agreed to join us. If there is another metro department representative you'd like to see at a future coffee meeting, please let me know.

PDS Weekly Activity Report

Each week, Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a report showing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These requests can include changes in zoning, variances, landscape plans, and more. There are two District 17 cases this week. One involves case 20-ZONE-0088, a change in zoning approved almost two years ago to permit a 16-unit multi-family residential development at 1213 Hines Court. If an applicant fails to act upon an approved plan within two years or obtain an extension, a new development plan would have to be approved. This request is for that extension. The other case is an application to shift the property line between two lots at 10124 Whipps Mill Road. Please contact the case manager listed in the report with any questions or comments.

District Download Podcast - Mayor Greenberg

podcast

The "District Download" podcast was started early last year to give citizens an opportunity to connect with their elected leaders, hear what's going on in metro government, learn what makes individual districts unique, and more. The latest podcast is now available. I sat down with Mayor Greenberg to discuss his new administration, public safety, budget priorities, transparency, and more. You can listen on AppleSpreaker, and Google. I hope you'll give it a listen!

La Grange Road/Whipps Mill Road Projects

Metro Public Works recently received Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funding to move forward on a project improving air quality in our area through road improvements and greater pedestrian access. The $876,000 received will go towards:

  • Constructing a sidewalk along Whipps Mill Road from Millgate Road to Hounz Lane
  • Closing Whipps Mill Road where it meets Hurstbourne Parkway from the west
  • Shoulder improvements along La Grange Road from UPS Drive to Whipps Mill Road east of Hurstbourne Parkway
  • A shared-use path along La Grange Road from Whipps Mill Road to Lakeland Road

If the bid process goes as hoped, work could begin as early as this summer.

Waste and Recycling Questions

I'll sometimes get a call that starts like this: "How do I get rid of (fill in the blank)?" Often, the call is about things like cardboard, batteries, latex paint, or light bulbs - things you might not be able to take to our Pop-Up Drop-Off events. If you've got some of these items lying around (and who doesn't!) because you aren't sure what to do with them, there are a couple of easy ways to find answers. Metro Public Works has a page dedicated to helping with this sort of question, particularly with the "What Goes Where" tab. In addition, you can download the Recycle Coach app here to learn more details about recycling correctly. If you still have questions, please let me know.
