Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! I hope you've had a great week and are looking forward to a restful weekend.

I want to first share some developments on a number of infrastructure projects in our area following some productive discussions with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and Metro Public Works this week. The proposed right turn lane from Westport Road to Chamberlain Lane, which I've written about before, has finally received all necessary approvals. It’s taken longer than I imagined (and has been an interesting lesson in intergovernmental bureaucracy!), but it looks like that project will begin as soon as the weather permits in late spring/early summer. Second, we had a very constructive conversation with KYTC about medians and ramps along our major corridors and investments we'd like to see in the way of plantings, maintenance, etc. There is work to be done moving forward, but we now have a path to making investments I think are important in keeping our area an attractive place to live. We checked in earlier this week with KYTC's project manager for I-Move Kentucky regarding sound barriers planned along portions of I-265 in our district. He is currently reviewing final plans for those walls. I will follow up again next month and share any updates with you. Finally, there are several sidewalk gaps along Westport Road, both east and west of I-265, that will be filled in the near future. Some of that work should get going by summer, though some may stretch into next year.

We had a great meeting last week with Goodwill discussing the "Another Way" program. It continues to show fantastic results and planning is underway to launch the next phase which includes signage, public donation opportunities (as an alternative to giving to folks directly), and continued expansion of the program. Next week, I'll spend part of my day riding in one of the vans alongside those we are helping. I think this will be an excellent opportunity to better understand what we can do to assist those in need (while also addressing the issue of panhandling).

Finally, next Thursday will mark the first "regular" Metro Council meeting of the year. One of the main things we'll do is appoint people to fill the District 3 and District 6 seats vacated by Keisha Dorsey and David James when they joined the Greenberg administration. It's not easy choosing someone to fill seats in this way, but I'm confident we'll find the right individuals. We've had nearly 30 people submit their name for consideration, and I'm grateful for their interest and willingness to serve.

In closing, don't hesitate to reach out if we can be of service.

New LMPD 8th Division Major

Wampler

LMPD's 8th Division has a new commanding officer, Major Eric Wampler. Major Wampler was hired in 2004 and assigned to the 4th Division. Since that time, he has served in two other divisions (3 and 6), been an Adjutant Lieutenant in the Chief's Office, and commanded the Public Integrity Unit. I have a meeting scheduled with Major Wampler in about a week. I look forward to hearing his plans for our division and sharing my perspective on District 17 issues. PDS Weekly Activity Report

Each week, Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These requests can include conditional use permits, changes in zoning, landscape plans, variances, and more. There is one case in this week's report involving property in District 17, a revised plan for a federal credit union branch at 13200 Magisterial Drive. For more information, please use the link above or contact the case manager at jonathan.lawler@louisvilleky.gov.

LWC Upgrading Meters in District 17

LWC

The Louisville Water Company (LWC) is implementing a multi-year project to upgrade its water meters. In the coming weeks, LWC contractors and employees will be doing work in our district to replace older meters with new ones. The installation is relatively quick as water should not need to be turned off for more than 30 minutes. Those impacted will receive a postcard in advance. Prior to work taking place, workers will knock on the door to let customers know what they're doing. They will also leave a note on the door when the job is complete. For more information on the project, click here.

Clean Collaborative Update

I've talked before about the Clean Collaborative and what that program involves. Started in 2021, it is a collection of departments and agencies (Public Works, Brightside, Codes and Regulations, etc.) working together to coordinate and maximize cleaning efforts. This effort includes cleaning along many of our primary roadways throughout the year. In the last couple of weeks, crews have cleaned along Goose Creek Road and Collins Lane, collecting 13 bags of trash and seven other items. If you notice an area that could use some attention from the Clean Collaborative, you can report it online using the link above or contact my office.

LD&T Hearing - 9903 Brownsboro Road

LDT

I mentioned last week that two meetings have been scheduled to review the revised detailed district development plan and variance for a proposed mixed-use development at 9903 Brownsboro Road. A meeting has been scheduled for February 9 as well to review not only the plan but two waivers involving encroachment into the landscape buffer area. Please contact clara.schweiger@louisvilleky.gov with any questions.
