Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday!

It's still pretty quiet downtown as Metro Council won't formally be back in session for a couple more weeks. Most of the current activity is focused on general organizing - forming and staffing committees, getting new members moved in, etc. It will be an interesting and exciting year with so many new members and a new administration. I'm looking forward to us rolling up our sleeves and getting started.

As I announced last week, I was recently elected president of the Metro Council for 2023. Some have asked what that means for our district, so I wanted to talk a bit about that. I'll still serve our district just as before and will still have Kip Eatherly as my legislative aide (as long as he's willing to put up with me!). I will also have someone to help with the added responsibilities - leading Metro Council meetings, serving on boards and commissions, and managing invitations and meeting requests from outside our district. I hope this will also serve as an opportunity to strengthen already solid working relationships with those in the various metro departments who make things happen in our district and throughout the city. At the end of the day, though, most of you won't notice much of a difference other than maybe seeing me on TV a little more often!

The last thing I want to mention is the tragic start to the year in regards to homicides. As the mayor said in his address, these are more than just numbers on a piece of paper. They are individuals, family members, and part of our community. The mayor laid out steps that I think are important to solving this problem, and I am committed to helping in whatever way I can. One sign that leads me to believe things will be different - the mayor immediately held a press conference, addressed the issue, and laid out a plan of action. This openness and responsiveness did not go unnoticed and provides me with a level of optimism moving forward.

External Agency Fund Grant Application

EAF

Louisville Metro Government will begin accepting applications Wednesday from local non-profits interested in External Agency Fund grants. These grants, funded through the city's General Fund, are awarded for the upcoming fiscal year (July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024).

There are three funding programs available: Social Services, Arts and Creative Industries, and Youth Engagement. For Social Services, the areas of focus are decreasing homelessness, increasing household financial stability, and increasing access to services/resources for a targeted population. For Arts and Creative Industries, the focus is on arts experiences for everyone, creative workforce, and creative community spaces/neighborhoods. Finally, the Youth Engagement funding program will assist non-profits that seek to provide young people access to needed resources/services, increase youth engagement in development opportunities and quality programming, or create opportunities for youth to re-engage with education and improve educational outcomes.

All agencies wishing to apply should have at least one representative attend the virtual orientation on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noon. The application window for each of the three areas will be open at 8 a.m. the following day. Use the QR code above to access the virtual meeting link, the applications for each funding program, contact information should you have questions, and more.
