Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday! What a wet week it's been. I'm sure our children would love to see all this precipitation return in a couple of weeks as snow, though our Metro Public Works Snow Team might have a different perspective!

Today, I'd like to focus on those who might need a little assistance this holiday season. If you know someone to whom this might apply, a good place to start is our Metro Department of Resilience & Community Services. RCS staff can help connect folks with utility assistance, nutrition programs, veterans services, housing/rental assistance programs, and more. It's not only government doing this work, of course. For example, Green Castle Baptist Church in our district is currently accepting referrals for families/individuals in need of food assistance over the holidays. Call their office at 243-4040 with the person's name, address, and telephone number to start that process. Please let my office know if there is a need with which you need help that isn't addressed through the avenues above.

Louisville being the kind of place it is, I imagine some of you are already starting to wonder what you can do to help. Eastern Area Community Ministries is collecting gift cards to help local families celebrate the holidays. They're running a bit low this year and have extended the drop-off deadline to Monday, December 12 at 2 p.m. They are asking those interested to purchase $25 gift cards to Walmart or Target and deliver them to the EACM office. In addition, Resilience & Community Services has set up a Holiday Line, something similar to the "Angel Tree" program, for children and seniors. If you'd like to help in some other way but aren't sure where to go, please let me know.

Finally, while not specifically focused on the holiday season, I'd be remiss if I didn't share an update I received last Friday on the amazing work being done by Goodwill through the "Another Way" program. Since July, Goodwill has served 583 unique individuals through the program (which is supported by metro government). 57 participants, almost 10% of the total, gained employment. 50 were provided temporary or permanent housing. Goodwill also transported people to treatment, helped others acquire IDs and/or Social Security cards, and led 117 participants through Goodwill's job readiness training or other programs. I am thankful for the work being done by the staff at Goodwill and the impact it is having on so many in our community.

I hope you have a great weekend. If I can be of assistance in any way, please let me know.

Coffee With Your Councilman - December 22

coffee

My final "Coffee with your Councilman" of 2022 will be Thursday, December 22 at 6 p.m. in the main training room of the Anchorage Middletown Fire & EMS station located at 9514 Featherbell Boulevard in Norton Commons. If you haven't attended one of my coffee meetings before, they are great opportunities to hear what's going on in metro government and share any concerns or questions you have. I hope to see you a week from Thursday!

Looking ahead to next year's meetings, please let me know if there is an organization or metro department you'd like to have represented or a specific topic you'd like to hear more about. I'd be happy to work on arranging those.

PDS Weekly Activity Report

Each week, Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a report listing all new land use applications in Jefferson County. These applications can include sign permits, landscape plans, waivers, changes in zoning, and more. There is just one District 17 case listed in this week's report, a request to shift the property line between 10122 and 10124 Whipps Mill Road. More information can be found in the link above. As a reminder, you can click here to subscribe to a wide range of e-news topics and notifications from metro government, including those involving development proposals in the district.

Santa Christmas Caravan

The Santa Christmas Caravan returns this year on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday, December 11 from 11:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The caravan will travel to multiple Louisville neighborhoods over the course of both days.
