+ Celebrate World Refugee Day
Monday, June 20 is World Refugee Day.
World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees around the globe.
It falls each year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
+ Happy Immigrant Heritage Month
A Proclamation on National Immigrant Heritage Month, 2022 from the White House
The United States is a Nation of immigrants — shaped by the courageous people from around the world who leave their homes, lives, and loved ones to seek refuge and opportunity on our shores. Their sacrifices and entrepreneurial spirit have contributed to the rich tapestry that has defined the character of our country for generations. Since our founding, the very idea of America as a Nation of limitless possibilities has been nurtured and advanced by immigrants. During National Immigrant Heritage Month, we honor the contributions of immigrants to our great Nation and celebrate their profound impact.
Immigrants fuel our economy and work in every profession, including health care, public service, law, education, engineering, construction, caregiving, manufacturing, service, agriculture, and countless other industries. They create new businesses, small and large, and generate millions of jobs in America. They are essential workers, providing critical services during COVID-19 and serving on the frontlines of research for vaccines and treatments. Immigrants have also helped the United States lead the world in science, technology, and innovation while contributing to the arts, culture, and government. They bring new traditions, customs, and perspectives that keep American innovation dynamic.

+ Mayor Fischer announces three recipients for 2022 Keepers of the Dream Freedom Award
Mayor Greg Fischer will present three community leaders – La Casita Center Executive Director Karina Barillas, Metro Council Liaison Wanda Mitchell-Smith and noted civic leader William Summers IV – with the prestigious Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Keepers of the Dream Freedom Award. The presentation will be at 6 p.m. Friday, June 17 at the inaugural Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration Gala at The Ali Center, 144 N. 6th St. This year’s theme is “Our Story, America’s Glory.”
“The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a champion of nonviolent social change who envisioned a world where every person has the opportunity to realize their full human potential. Our city’s value of compassion is based on that vision. And there is much, much more work to be done,” the Mayor said. “And as we continue to work to realize that vision, it’s a great joy to take a moment to celebrate the outstanding civic leaders in our community who passionately push for social change. These award recipients are part of ‘our story, Louisville’s glory.’ Each of them has served tirelessly to make Louisville a fairer and more just city.”
