Armed Forces Day - May 21, 2022

a

Armed Forces Day was created on August 31, 1949, by then-Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the Armed Forces’ unification under one Department of Defense by then-President Harry S. Truman when he signed the National Security Act into law on July 26, 1947.

It was designed to expand public understanding of what type of job is performed and the role of the military in civilian life. It was a day for the military to show “state-of-the-art” equipment to the civilian population they were protecting. And it was a day to honor and acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States.

The armed forces consists of six service branches: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Space Force.

Message From McCraney

Hello Neighbors and Friends,

I am appealing to the weather gods to be kind on Sunday when Shakespeare in the Park takes center stage at 2:00 p.m. at Windy Hills Green (Highway 42 and Rudy Lane, Louisville, KY 40207). I am also hoping that you will join me for this District 7 community gathering to enjoy Julius Caesar, depicted by six of Kentucky Shakespeare's finest actors. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on, along with the entire family and friends in your neighborhood. It will be a great time to kick back, relax, and be entertained. (Oh, and for those of us who need to brush up on our Shakespeare/Julius Caesar knowledge, we might want to click here before the show begins: Julius Caesar Summary and Study Guide | SuperSummary.)

Regarding Council business this week, the agenda was very light. (You can read below the summary of the legislation that was passed.) However, the highlight of the night was devoted to the public and the citizens who chose to sign up and show up to address the Council. Twenty-six people signed up to speak and all but seven planned to speak in person at City Hall.

There is one more opportunity for the Council to hear your three-minute public comments about the budget in-person or via WebEx. A link on the Metro Council website will be active on June 1 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to sign up to speak on June 2, 2022, starting at 6:00 p.m. Click here to sign up to speak. It sure would be great to look across the room and see my District 7 neighbors at the podium or online addressing the Council and expressing your concerns or desires for the budget you want to see our city adopt. Come on, sign up --- give it a try. We (I!) want to hear from you. Also, an online form for written budget comments is now available on the Metro Council website. Comments will be taken through June 3 at 5:00 p.m.

As usual, you may watch all committee meetings live on Metro TV, Spectrum Cable Channel 184, on UVERSE at Channel 99, or on the Metro Council Facebook page. Proceedings may also be streamed live from the Metro Council Clerk's Archived Media page.

If you tune in next week, you will hear from several Louisville Metro departments as they discuss their budget requests. Several key departments that represent the bulk of the budget will address the Budget Committee, on which I serve. The list includes:

  • Civic Innovation and Technology
  • Coroner
  • Corrections
  • County Attorney
  • Criminal Justice Commission
  • Internal Audit
  • LMPD
  • Louisville Forward (which includes Codes and Regulations, Economic Development, the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, and Develop Louisville)
  • Office of Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods
  • Public Defender’s Office
  • Resilience and Community Service
  • Waterfront Development

Enjoy the weekend, and please stop by Windy Hills Green on Sunday at 2:00 p.m., if you can!

No music is so charming to my ear as the requests of my friends, and the supplications of those in want of my assistance. ---Julius Caesar

The Louisville Zoo’s 6-year-old Hartmann’s mountain zebra, Azizi, has given birth to a female foal as the Zoo’s mini baby boom continues. The foal was born just before midnight on Thursday, May 12. Both mom and baby are doing well.

The foal is already running around and keeping mom busy. Guests can stop by and see the pair with the rest of the zebra harem in the Africa zone.

At the neonatal exam, the newborn weighed 71 lbs. and was deemed strong and healthy. Her name will be determined soon.

Zoo Babies presented by Norton Children’s is a reminder that every animal birth is important and an opportunity to “better the bond between people and our planet.” To learn more about the program, click here.

Why Quilts Matter:

History, Art & Politics: Empowering Women One Quilt at a Time
Sunday, May 22, 12:30 pm

FREE

This episode from the nine-part PBS series Why Quilts Matter, focuses on the historical and contemporary roles of quilts as an avenue of personal expression, a sly medium of social and political opinion, and a building block of financial security. Unique among objects, quilts can be seen as utilitarian objects and high art. They are something made from humble resources and can be nurturing as well as inspiring. This documentary invites quiltmakers, curators, and scholars to share the number of ways quilts continue to be woven into history. 2011, U.S., video, 27 minutes. Recommended for 12+.

  • Having trouble keeping track of taking your meds? Flip the bottle upside down after you take them. Then flip them back before you go to bed.
  • Whenever switching medications or dosages, take a picture of the bottles and save it to your phone. This may save you in an emergency situation, or if you simply just forget.
  • Going car shopping? You should know that since 2018 cars have been required to have a backup camera. This is not a bonus feature and many salespeople will present it as a luxury item.
  • When painting your house always make sure to peel off the painter's tape when the paint is still wet. Many people let it dry first and get cracked and blurry lines because of it.
  • Increase the life of your garden and longevity of your top soil by mixing in crushed up coffee grounds, banana peels and egg shells.
  • Clog the toilet but don’t have a plunger? Dump (no pun intended) some hot water and salt in the toilet, leave for 5 minutes, and problem solved.
  • When shopping at Target, if the price ends in 8, it will be marked down again soon. If it ends in a 4, it’s the lowest it will ever be.
  • Happiness is instantly contagious, and you can easily become a happier person by simply surrounding yourself with others who are happy.
