Hello Neighbors and Friends!

Happy Oaks Day!

Although it's wet outside, nothing can top the beauty of the day because Oaks at Churchill Downs is designated as a day at the track for us "locals." From hats to fashions and Mint Juleps, this is the season of all seasons in Louisville, Kentucky. Rain or shine, the show must go on....and it does. People are preparing to receive guests, bet on the Phillies, and attend parties. Whatever you have on your agenda for this Derby season, have a great time and be careful. Remember the pandemic and please follow COVID protocols that are mandated for the places you go, or those that make you comfortable being around people and large crowds. By the way, coordinating a matching mask with your outfit or hat is a "thing" these days --- it's all the rage.

On another note, have you noticed how well our city "cleans up" during Derby season? Yes, litter is picked up, potholes are filled, daffodils are planted, and store shelves are stocked. Well, perhaps as a result, District 7 received some beautification at Westport Road and I-264. I'm sure most of you have been wondering what was going on at the beautiful Brightside sites underneath the interstate. Wonder no more --- here is information I received this week explaining "what had happened." Please know this, Brightside is back in business! (See the picture below.)

From the Interim Director of Brightside:

Over the last 2 years Brightside has undergone several changes and dealt with challenges we couldn’t have foreseen. In the 2019 Louisville Metro budget cycle Brightside was faced with a budget cut that eliminated two of our staff members as of July of that year.  These two staff members were our Horticulture Manager and Landscape Assistant.

We were able to pivot and adjust the workload of our remaining staff to keep the landscape work and BrightSite program up to par with the help of work-release inmate volunteers from DISMAS charities.   Then in March 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything.  We were unable to continue our work with DISMAS Charities and were faced with even more staffing and labor challenges.  Lastly, we have had significant changes to our leadership since December 2019, with the departure of our previous director and then a subsequent leadership gap which was resolved at the end of December 2021.

As a direct result of these circumstances, we recognize that the BrightSite program was not held to the standard of quality previously expected and maintained.  I am writing like to let you know that we are currently in the process of remedying that situation. We recently completed a full inventory and assessment of all 24 of our BrightSite locations throughout Jefferson County.  Recommendations for improvements were made to utilize the currently existing plant materials, then going one step further to add new species of reblooming and perennial plants, increasing ground cover thus nearly, and in some sites entirely, removing the need for mulch, as well as replacing some of the plants no longer thriving.  Additionally, we are replacing all the BrightSite signage to update the logos and give a fresh face to these beautiful improvements."

Hooray for Brightside! District 7 and the entire Louisville community are better because you are now better. We will do our part, too, by keeping our personal property spruced up and picking up litter as we see it. We are in this together. There is absolutely no excuse for waiting until Derby season to beautify our city. This task should be a year-round commitment.

Happy Oaks Day --- Happy Derby Day --- Happy Mother's Day!

Brightside spruced up the Windy Hills quad as shown in the photo above. The Westport Road quad refresh has started with weeding, pruning, and pre-emergent spraying.  Brightside will return to both sites to add plant materials and mulch after Derby.

Safety Tips for Derby and Mother's Day

It’s a big weekend for Louisville. We’re celebrating horses, fun, fashion, food, and mothers.  COVID-19, specifically the omicron BA.2 variant, has crashed the party.  Well, they’re more like a guest who’s worn out their welcome and won’t leave.

Here are a few tips to help you reduce your risk of being exposed to the virus:

  • Check our covid data dashboard before the event to see Louisville’s current covid situation. Access your risk based on your personal health and choose protection measures that work for you.
  • Make sure you’ve had all the doses of covid for which you are eligible.
  • Take a covid test before heading to any large gathering.
  • Stay at home if you are sick.
  • Avoid being around others who are sick.
  • Wear a mask, preferably an N95 or surgical one, if it makes you more comfortable to be around others.
  • Practice good handwashing and hand sanitizing throughout the day.

If you need help finding a vaccination or testing location, or should you test positive and aren’t sure what to do, call the LOU Health Helpline for support, 502-912-8598.

Louisville remains in the green COVID-19 community level category

Here are the key COVID-19 data metrics for week of May 1, 2022:

  • Daily incidence rate of 26 cases per 100,000 population
  • Weekly incidence rate of 180.31 cases per 100,000 population
  • 1,397 new cases reported over the previous week
  • 29 newly reported deaths

Hospitalization data:

  • 38 patients currently hospitalized
  • 6 patients in ICU
  • 4 patients on ventilators

 Vaccines:

  • 76% of Louisville residents have received at least one dose of vaccine
  • 65.8% have completed the vaccine series
  • 45.9% have received a booster dose

Did you know? You can now find the University of Louisville's Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute's wastewater monitoring for COVID-19 on our data dashboard.

Need help finding a COVID test or vaccination location? Have you tested positive for COVID, but aren't sure what to do? Call the LOU Health COVID-19 Helpline, 502-912-8598, available Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Language translation services are available.

Public Works Projects

pw

Metro Public Works is making progress on several projects that will improve pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular access along portions of New La Grange Road, La Grange Road (KY 146), and Whipps Mill Road. A description of each improvement is below:
  • A right turn lane will be constructed on New La Grange Road at its intersection with Willow Springs Drive.
  • New La Grange Road will be repaved from Shelbyville Road to Whipps Mill Road. A bicycle lane will be included in the new striping.
  • Whipps Mill Road will be closed on the west side of its intersection with Hurstbourne Parkway, creating a cul-de-sac. Sidewalks will be added on the north side of Whipps Mill Road to fill in existing gaps, and a bicycle/pedestrian connection will connect to Hounz Lane.
  • A shared use path will be built on the north side of La Grange Road between Whipps Mill Road and Lakeland Road.

The contract for this project is scheduled to be awarded in the next 4-6 weeks with construction expected to begin by late June, weather permitting. I will share updates regarding any road closures and a timeline of the work as they become available, likely in July.

Better Business Bureau Scam Alert

Better

.

With the amount of moving activity during summer, the potential of being a victim of a moving scam also increases. There are several versions of moving scams reported to BBB every year, including:

  • Consumers receive a quote and pay a deposit, but the movers never show up.
  • The moving company provides a quote based on expected weight and, after loading the truck, they inform the consumer that the load is over the expected weight and an additional fee will have to be paid. Most of the time, the additional fee is significantly more expensive per pound, sometimes as much as double the original estimate.
  • The most disruptive and difficult to anticipate moving scam is when everything appears to be going well. The movers provide an estimate, arrive on time and load your belongings on a truck. However, this is where the interaction turns disastrous. When the truck fails to arrive at its destination, either your belongings are simply gone or the company requires the consumer to pay an additional fee to have them delivered, holding the possessions hostage.

  • Have a headache? Submerge your feet and hands in hot water and put a bag of frozen peas on the back of your head. The heat on your extremities pulls the blood from your head relieving your head pains.
  •  Making banana bread but don’t have ripe bananas? You can ripen some quickly by putting them in the oven for 40 minutes at 300F.
  • Taking your pet to the vet? Take a video of them coughing, breathing strangely, limping, etc. Animals may not show that same problem properly at the vet's office and the video can help the vet get a diagnose. The same technique works when taking your car into a mechanic.
  • The FastCustomer app will never make you wait on hold again. It calls the company for you,  waits on hold and then calls you when an actual human is on the line.
  • Want your berries to last longer? Dip them in a solution of one part vinegar to three parts water and dry them. This will help them fight off any bacteria looming in your fridge. Then wash and eat.
  • If you ever smell a fish odor in an unusual place in your home, it might be a sign that there's an overheating circuit around, which can ultimately cause an electrical fire.
