Hello Neighbors and Friends,
It's DERBY SEASON. Can you feel it? It's in the air...it's everywhere!
Thunder Over Louisville is the annual kickoff event of the Kentucky Derby Festival, which features an airshow and fireworks display. It is generally held each April, about two weeks before the first Saturday in May, or Derby Day. In years where Easter Sunday falls on the usually scheduled weekend, Thunder is moved a week earlier. It is the largest annual fireworks display in North America and began as part of an opening ceremonies event in 1989 with daytime fireworks. 1990 brought the first nighttime fireworks event. It officially began in its current location along the Ohio River in 1991 with fireworks, and an annual air show was added in 1992 (Wikipedia).
If you are planning to participate in the Thunder Over Louisville festivities, here are a few things you may need to know:
1. Airshow starts at 3 p.m., and fireworks around 9:30 p.m.
2. These things are NOT permitted at the Waterfront for Thunder (Gege Reed, Courier-Journal):
- Outside alcohol or any liquid in glass bottles. Plastic bottles and food are fine and vendors selling food and alcohol will be plentiful.
- Anything that flies via remote control but especially drones. This is an airshow and such things are banned by the FAA.
- Tents, canopies, stakes, pennant lines, and hammocks. Picnic blankets, tarps (limited to 10-inch-by-10-inch) and lawn chairs are OK.
- Taping or roping off of areas
- Charcoal or propane grills
- Pets
- Bikes, skateboards and skates are not allowed in the viewing areas including rental bikes and scooters. If you ride your bicycle to Thunder Over Louisville, you can park it at the “Free Valet Bicycle Parking” located on the northeast corner of Witherspoon Street and Preston Street, north of Slugger Field. The facility is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Bring a lock.
3. TARC busses will be running, and are a very convenient way to travel to Thunder.
4. In Downtown Louisville there are more than 52,000 public parking, off-street spaces within a 10-block walk to the River. For more information on garage and lot locations visit one of these websites at: www.riversideparking.com/locations.html or www.louisvilleky.gov/PARC/ or contact the Parking Authority of River City (PARC) at (502) 587-PARK.
5. In Southern Indiana public and private parking is available. Contact the Clark/Floyd County Convention and Tourism Bureau more information (812) 282-6654. Water Tower Square (Jeffersonville) – RV & Car Parking available. For more information on costs and location call (812) 288-9057.
6. The weather for Thunder has varied widely. Highs for the day have ranged from mid-40’s to mid-80’s. Generally it gets cooler at night, so some people take a sweater or jacket with them. This year, the high is predicted to be 84. Do yourself a favor, take and drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, and wear sunglasses.

Remove Highlighter Stains
Ever wish you could remove highlighter marks from a book? Lemon juice fades highlighter enough to make it virtually undetectable. Cut a lemon in half and get some juice on a cotton swab. Run the swab over the highlighted text and watch the color fade.
Lemon juice from a container also seems to do the trick. Though not quite as well on the pieces we tested, and the older the mark, the more stubborn it is to remove.
1. Drawn to scale 2. Round of applause 3. Splitting hairs 4. There all the same
5. There's no end to it. 6. Different strokes for different folks
