Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday!  I hope everyone is safe and well and preparing for a festive holiday season.

On Monday, we celebrated the grand opening of the Middletown Library. It isn’t every day the city opens a new branch, and I was happy to see it come together. You can read more about the library below, but I believe it will be a great success. In fact, I had dinner with one of the Middletown commissioners last night. He mentioned that he was at the library early yesterday afternoon and it was filled with 30-40 people! Our library system is one of the crown jewels of metro government. This new library, coupled with the Northeast Regional Library, should serve residents and students in our area well for years to come.

In other news, our offices will be closed for the holiday next week (though you can still call or email, of course). When we return, I expect us to take up additional discussions around the American Rescue Plan, get regular updates on our public safety initiatives, and get our mid-year look at the budget. In other words, it will be a busy December!

In closing, I want to take a minute to reflect upon another year that is drawing to a close. I am truly thankful for the men and women in metro government who serve our community every day, the dedicated service of our public officials and volunteers (be it commissioners, mayors, or HOA board members), the opportunity you have given me to serve our community, and the support of colleagues, friends, and family throughout the year.

While we have challenges and disagreements, I think it’s important for each of us to reflect and remember that we have much more in common than we have that divides us. Our society does not have to be driven by a winner take all, win at all costs, ‘you're either with me or against me’ mentality. There is room for compromise, and I am steadfast in my resolve that compromise and collaboration leads to better outcomes for us all. Despite our many challenges, I am confident in a brighter tomorrow.

I hope that you and your family have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

I was pleased to join Middletown Mayor Byron Chapman, District 19 Councilman Anthony Piagentini, LFPL Director Lee Burchfield, Library Foundation Executive Director Chandra Gordon, and many others Monday for the grand opening of the new Middletown Library. This 5,200 square-foot facility, a $1.2 million project, contains computers, meeting spaces for all ages, and more than 25,000 books.

The library is open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Click here for more information on the library including location and upcoming programs.

PDS Weekly Activity Report

Metro Planning and Design Services (PDS) creates a weekly report of all new planning/land use applications in Louisville. These applications can include landscape plans, sign permits, variances, changes in zoning, and more. There is one District 17 case in this week's report, a request to shift a building limit line on property located on Anoka Court. The case managers for each case are listed in the report if you have any questions or comments.

Meadow Vale Mayor Mary Hornek Honored

Hornek

Meadow Vale Mayor Mary Hornek was honored with the Peyton Hoge III Public Service Award at last night's annual meeting of the Jefferson County League of Cities. Mayor Hornek has served as mayor of Meadow Vale since 2012 and was a city commissioner for two years prior. My office has worked with Mayor Hornek on multiple occasions. I can tell you she cares a great deal about her city and our community and this honor is well deserved. Congratulations, Mayor Hornek!

Last night was also a reminder for me how important it is for people like Mayor Hornek to serve in these roles. Suburban city mayors and commissioners, HOA presidents and board members, condominium association board members - those who fill these roles spend countless hours (typically with little or no fanfare) doing their part to make our community clean, safe, and successful. For all of you who have served in this way or are currently serving - thank you!

Traffic Alert - E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park Area

The NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships will be held tomorrow at E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. The women's race will begin at 11 a.m. with the men's race to follow around noon. There will be a total of 64 teams competing which will make it a little more difficult to find a place to eat tonight and mean more vehicles in the vicinity until the races are complete.

Keep Out The FOG

FOG

As we near Thanksgiving, MSD would like to remind everyone about the dangers that fats, oil, and grease (FOG) pose to the pipes in our homes and to our sewer system. Please take an extra minute or two to properly dispose of these items after your Thanksgiving meal. There are things you can do year-round as well to protect your own plumbing and ensure safe, clean waterways for everyone. Click here for tips and more information.
