Friday Thoughts

Happy Friday!

I want to start off this week with some good news. Earlier this morning, I had the opportunity to join Library Director Lee Burchfield, District 19 Councilman Anthony Piagentini, District 9 Councilman Bill Hollander, Middletown Mayor Byron Chapman, and others to tour the (still under construction) Middletown Library. The building is coming together nicely and will be another beautiful addition to our library system. You can see a couple of the renderings we were shown here and here. I am very excited about this service being provided to residents and look forward to the grand opening, tentatively scheduled for mid-November. More information to come as that date draws nearer.

Next, I want to touch on where we are in our fight against COVID-19. The good news is that our numbers have started to trend down and the burden on our hospitals has eased. The bad news is that statewide, there are only about 137 open/staffed ICU beds. Kentucky has 120 counties - meaning on average, every county in the commonwealth has only slightly more than one open ICU bed. Jefferson County has the bulk of the open beds, so the situation is actually much worse elsewhere in Kentucky. Think about the potential implications - a car accident involving two people needing critical care and our hospitals only have room to care for one of the victims. This is a risk to our healthcare system and all of us and one we should all be concerned about and do all we can to mitigate.

We still have about 100,000 Louisville residents who are able but have not yet been vaccinated. If you or someone you know has not been vaccinated and has questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call my office. We will do all we can to get you in touch with experts in our medical community who have no agenda and can answer your questions about safety, efficacy, or anything else.

Finally, like most employers, Metro is struggling to fill open positions. The shortages at LMPD have been well-documented, but we also have openings in numerous departments across the government. If you or anyone you know is looking for work, you can use this link to see all current open positions.

I hope you have a great weekend and if there is anything you need, don’t hesitate to call my office. Thank you!

COVID Update

covid

There were 2,933 new COVID-19 cases over the previous week.

While a downward trend is great to see, the news isn't all good. Our positivity rate climbed to 13.15% meaning there are more cases out there than we know about. Please continue to mask when appropriate, stay home when you're not feeling well, and consult with your physician about getting vaccinated. Click here for information about COVID testing, such as when you should get tested and a list of testing locations.

It's also the time of year to get your flu shot. While flu season last year was nearly nonexistent due to the many mandates and restrictions in place, this year could be very different without those. Our hospitals and medical workers are already under a great deal of stress due to COVID. Let's do our best not to add to that because we're sick with the flu.
