 Pop-Up Drop-Offs are free recycling and large item disposal events for residents of Jefferson County. They are held monthly, from March to November, at various locations around the county. The first two events of the year helped residents properly dispose of 572 tires, almost 12,000 pounds of metal, and more than 5,000 pounds of household recycling items. The Metro Council held its second meeting of May last night. Below is a summary of the meeting:
Land Use - Changes in zoning were approved for properties in Districts 15 and 22. The Metro Council also approved a proposal rezoning property along Rollington Road in District 17. Binding elements were added that require (1) a greater percentage of existing trees to be kept relative to the plan approved by the Planning Commission and (2) Metro Council approval of any changes in density.
"Buffer Zone" - The Council approved an ordinance seeking to ensure safe entry to and exit from healthcare facilities.
Boards/Commissions - The Council approved appointments to the Housing Authority Board, the Bardstown Road Overlay District Board, the Waterfront Development Corporation Board, the NuLu Review Overlay District Board, the Downtown Development Review Overlay District Board, the Louisville Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Landmarks and Preservation Districts Commission, the Water Works Board, the Board of Health, the Metropolitan Sewer District Board, the KentuckianaWorks - Greater Louisville Workforce Development Board, and the TARC Board. Restricted Metals - An ordinance regulating pawnbrokers, secondhand dealers, and secondary metals recyclers was amended in an effort to curb the theft of restricted metals such as catalytic converters.

Another opportunity to participate in the budget process will be a community conversation held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Northeast Regional Library. This discussion will focus specifically on infrastructure. You can join in person or virtually, though registration is required for both options. The registration link also includes information about four other community conversations over the next couple of weeks. Those meetings will touch on economic mobility, public safety, economic development, and racial equity.
The Metro Planning & Design Services (PDS) Weekly Activity Report is a great way to stay up to date on land use proposals throughout Jefferson County. This report covers applications for street closures, variances, changes in zoning, and more. E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park is in the process of converting several of its tennis courts to 16 new pickleball courts. The courts will operate on a first come, first served basis, though players will also have the option of reserving courts for a fee. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of June.
