+ The Office for Globalization welcomes the 2021 Louisville Welcome Academy cohort
The Louisville Welcome Academy is a free leadership training program sponsored by the Louisville Metro Government Office for Globalization. The mission is to build the knowledge and networks of foreign-born leaders to increase their capacity and become key stakeholders to empower and assist their communities.
“I believe this academy will help me to learn about our community in more detail and what resources are available for the new residents. I hope to build a network of likeminded people and form partnerships and/or create projects that will address certain need gaps in the community.” – Elena Shulgina, LWA 2021 Cohort Participant.
In order to practice social distancing and follow health and safety guidelines, only 12 participants have been selected for this year’s cohort. However, the group is highly diverse and represents the multiculturalism of the Louisville community including 10 nationalities and over 12 languages – all with one common mission to make Louisville a more welcoming city for everyone.
Welcome to Oremeyi Kareem, Amalia Gamez Guerra, Elena Shulgina, Maria Martinez Amariles, Alinoti Malebo, Saravanan Murugan, Joel Buno, Mikayla Durrance, Irina Baptiste, Gwen Snow, Alexis Buchumi, and Di Tran.
+ Louisville selected to develop financial counseling as a free public service for residents in need
This week, Louisville Metro Government was selected by the national Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund) to receive more than two years of funding and technical support to implement proven financial empowerment programming in the city.
Louisville will receive support to bring free, professional, one-on-one financial counseling as a new public service to residents, particularly of need as they deal with the financial impacts of COVID-19. Louisville is one of 35 local governments across the country that are working with the CFE Fund to offer this proven model developed initially by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg in New York City in 2008.
“In Louisville, we know the financial health of our city is inextricably tied to the financial health of our residents, and being successful requires having the tools to understand money management,” said Mayor Greg Fischer.
Louisville, through the Louisville Metro Office Of Resilience and Community Services, is one of five municipal governments selected to receive a grant and intensive technical assistance to prepare to launch a local Financial Empowerment Center through the national FEC Public platform.
