Shelby Park Neighborhood Association continues its efforts to memorialize the history of this corner of Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – December 28, 2020 – The Shelby Park Neighborhood Association, along with the Louisville Historical League, announced the dedication of its seventh historic marker. Since 1949, the Kentucky Historical Marker, coordinated by Kentucky Historical Society, has allowed communities to illuminate Kentucky’s complex story with more than 2,400 markers.

This marker will tell the story of the third, oldest Roman Catholic lay organization in our country, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, and its transition to a non-profit provider of multiple services based in the Shelby Park neighborhood, the compassionate center and heart of Louisville.

A brief, outdoor ceremony according to CDC guidelines is scheduled for Monday, December 28, 2020 at 1 pm. The marker is located on the South Jackson side of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s property near the former St. Paul parish, now the Open Hand Kitchen, one of the many services the Shelby Park non-profit provides citywide to our neighbors.

The Shelby Park Neighborhood Association raised the bar among neighborhoods, and neighborhood associations. The incorporated non-profit focuses on affordable housing, adding to its neighborhood’s canopy with 500 trees in 5 years, advancing the Shelby Park master plan, multiple murals, advocating for all of the neighborhood’s non-profits and lobbying for safer streets with two-way conversion, including a $500,000 line item in the 2021 Kentucky Transportation budget.

This seventh marker highlights the culture of a unique corner of Louisville. The neighborhood expects the installation of its eighth marker on Monday. At a total of ten roadside markers, the Kentucky Historical Society will designate Shelby Park as a separate State tour, the first Louisville neighborhood to do so.

Volunteers Needed for Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness

We are looking for a dedicated team of volunteers to work directly with the health department staff to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine to our first responders during the first phase of the COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

LMPHW is recruiting both non-medical and medical volunteers.  Non-medical community volunteers will assist with scheduling and confirming appointments, collecting documents, temperature checks, and restocking supplies. Medically trained volunteers (specialized training and licensing required) will assist with administering the vaccine, medical screening, and triage.

There will be three different shifts available each day – 7:30 to 11:30am, 11am to 3pm, and 2:30 to 6:30pm. The first phase  will kick-off on January 4 and continue over the next several weeks (Mon – Fri)   

We will be hosting a training for all volunteers on Thursday, December 31, 9-11am at Broadbent Arena.  We will be walking through the whole event and discussing each role.  Please make every effort to attend this training. You will need to enter the fairgrounds through Gate 4 and let the attendant know that you are there for the Mass Vaccination Event. The Mayor's Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods (OSHN) would like to invite you to be a part of the One Love Louisville Networking Night featuring our special guest from the Kent School of Social Work, Sara Williams MSSW, CSW.  January 26 is an opportunity for citizens to learn more about Violence Prevention efforts as well as find out about important resources and initiatives in our community. Our Networking Nights create an environment for change agents to build a network of citizens as well as agencies involved in efforts to help prevent violence. It provides a space for continued development of violence prevention knowledge and resources. During this Networking Night, you will learn individual and collective efforts to prevent suicide and coping strategies during the age of COVID-19.

Pets of the Week

Cat of the Week: Woop Woop may be blind but so is love. Do you have room in your home for this sweet senior? Woop Woop is approximately 9-years-old and she is a very friendly who enjoys being petted. Woop Woop can be fearful because of her blindness, so she doesn’t like surprises. However, she warms up quickly to new people who first put their hand by her face or gently pats her head.  Woop Woop’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. She’s already spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations. Woop Woop’s ideal home would be calm with plenty of big, warm blankets to cuddle under. Dog of the Week: Flick also goes by the title of ‘awesome dog’. That’s because the approximately 2-year-old German Shepherd mix has all of the qualities of a great companion. Flick is friendly, sweet and affectionate. He likes hugs and being held, and absolutely loves kisses! Flick is even housetrained. He does have one tiny problem though, he doesn’t like cats and he’s proud of it!  If you have a cat-free home for this toy-crazy bachelor, then he wants to meet you. Flick’s adoption fee is waived for an approved adopter, thanks to the Pay It Forward Program. To meet Flick, visit Animal House Adoption Center (3705 Manslick Rd.) from 12-6pm daily, no appointment necessary. Flick weighs approximately 57lbs. Crime Mapping

First Division

Major Jim Cirillo James Cirillo started in law enforcement with the Louisville Metro Police Department in January 2001 as a patrol officer.  He then moved up to patrol sergeant, detective sergeant, Technology Services Lieutenant and Special Response Team Commander. He is currently assigned as Commander of the 1st Division.  He has a bachelor of arts degree in Criminal Justice from American Military University, an associate degree in Fire Technology and Administration from Capitol Community College as well as a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s Administrative Officers Course.   He is a seven-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

Second Division

Major Ryan Bates Bates began his law enforcement career in August 1997 with the Louisville Division of Police. He served in the former Second, Fourth, and Sixth Districts. He was also a member of the Street Crimes Unit and the Gang Squad. After merger, Bates served as a patrol officer in the First Division. He was promoted to sergeant in August 2005. He served as a sergeant in the Second Division where he supervised the mid-watch platoon, FLEX Unit, and Detectives Unit. In 2012, Bates was promoted to lieutenant and assigned to the late-watch platoon in the Fourth Division. He also served in the Second Division, where he supervised the mid-watch platoon and Division Resource Officers (DROs).   After being promoted to the rank of major, Bates commanded the Fourth Division. Major Bates served on the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team for 14 years. He served on the SWAT Team as an officer, sergeant, and lieutenant. He was appointed as the Assistant Commander in 2012 and Commander in 2015. Bates has also served on two (2) task forces which were created to address violent crime in the community. Major Bates is a graduate of Xavier University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Business. He is also a graduate of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officers Course.

Fourth Division

Major Shannon Lauder Major Shannon Lauder joined the Louisville Metro Police Department in 2008. She served as a patrol officer in the 4th Division, primarily in the Old Louisville neighborhood. She also spent 6 years as a hostage negotiator and team leader for LMPD’s Hostage Negotiation Team. She was a detective in the Crimes Against Children Unit (CACU) investigating physical, sexual and internet crimes against children across Louisville Metro. She was then promoted to sergeant in 2015, where she served in the 6th Division before becoming a Professional Standards Unit investigator. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2018 and served as a patrol lieutenant in the 4th Division. Most recently she was assigned as the Commander of the Special Victims Unit. The SVU consists of the Sex Crimes Unit, the Domestic Violence Unit and the Crimes Against Seniors Unit. In 2020 Major Lauder was promoted to the rank of Major and serves as the Commander of the 4th Division. Major Lauder holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Political Science from the University of Kentucky and is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Louisville. She is a graduate of the 143rd Session of the Southern Police Institute’s (SPI) Administrative Officer’s Course at the University of Louisville.
