District 10 honors Wanda Mitchell-Smith at 18th Annual Black History Month Program "Reaffirming Our Diverse Culture"

BHM PM with Wanda Mitchell-Smith

The District 10 honoree for the Annual Black History Month Program is Wanda Mitchell-Smith.

An advocate for her Bashford Manor neighborhood, Wanda also serves Louisville Metro as Legislative Aide to District 4 Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith.

She has more than 25 years of experience as a community development liaison, serving AFSCME Council 62 and the Kentucky AFL/CIO.

Wanda was elected as a delegate to the National Democratic Convention in 1996 and 2004, and served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Lieutenant Governor Stephen L. Henry and Special Assistant & Community Liaison to Congressman Mike Ward.

She has celebrated 35 years of marriage to Daryl A. Smith, and they are proud parents of their daughter Erin Elizabeth. A member of the Central District Baptist Association Women’s Auxiliary, she is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Wanda acknowledged her call into the ministry at First Gethsemane Baptist Church in 2007 and preached her initial Sermon on March 12, 2008.

Congratulations and thank you to Wanda Mitchell-Smith!

Kenny Machtolff, 1932-2020

Louisville and our District 10 community lost a great citizen, Ken Machtolff, on February 16.

"I appreciated Ken’s eclectic interests from clocks to coins to our environment and a strong advocacy to improve our community," Councilman Mulvihill said. "Ken definitely left our world a better place than he found it."

Machtolff was 88. A 1949 graduate of Valley High School, he went on to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. After leaving the military, he earned his commercial pilot's license and served as an aircraft mechanic, including Chief Aircraft Maintenance Officer for Humana leadership.

He was an advocate for Camp Zachary Taylor and efforts to memorialize it. He was a member of the District 10 Advisory Board and a board member of the Louisville Nature Center, and had served the community as a volunteer fireman in the '60s and '70s.

Kenny was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Tillie Smith Machtolff; granddaughter Bailey Marie Swett and son-in-law Brian Swett. Survivors include his daughters Sharon Merker (Steve), Kim Swett, and Gayle Staber (Karl); grandsons Karl Staber (Jill), Matt Staber, and Mitchell Swett; sister Elaine Morgan and her children Linda, Doug and Laura; sister-in-laws Mary Rita Tackett and Janice Smith; brother-in-law Thad Smith (Teresa); and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Ratterman and Sons, 3800 Bardstown Road. His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Brigid Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Louisville Nature Center, 3745 Illinois Avenue, Louisville, KY 40213 or Mass of the Air. Online condolences may be shared at www.Ratterman.com.
