Kentucky's First Needle Exchange Opens

demo

Kentucky's first needle exchange opened Wednesday in Louisville. The program is designed to reduce the spread of HIV and hepatitis in the community. The Louisville Metro Department of Health and Wellness mobile health unit will be parked so that drug users can get free, clean needles.

Council members, President David Tandy D-4, CW. Welch D-13 and CM Bill Hollander D-9 participated in the opening and then watched a demonstration of how the exchange will work.

CW Welch, who is also a registered nurse, believes the crisis is so serious it will overcome any remaining skepticism in her district.  "We do have quite an issue with needles being found around on the streets in my district," she said.

The Louisville Metro Public Health & Wellness needle exchange mobile center will be located on Gray Street by the Health Department.  It will be available Tuesday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Free Family Swim Nights

Councilwoman Welch announces Free Family Swim Nights at the Fairdale swimming pool now through July 28th on Tuesday nights from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

“With busy schedules and parents working, sometimes families just don’t have the chance to have fun together during the week,” says Welch. “Cooling off at the pool is a great way to spend quality time together, and we are glad to be able to have two of our best pools available for that purpose.

The Fairdale Pool is located at Hornbeck Park 760 Fairdale Road. Councilwoman Fowler is also sponsoring the Free Family Swim Nights at the Sun Valley pool.  The Sun Valley Community Center pool has the same hours and is located at 6505 Bethany Lane.

Admission is free but parents or guardians must be with their children at all times during the event. No drop offs are allowed. Proper swimwear is required.
