Difference is You Award nomination submission deadline is this Friday

diy2

The nomination submission deadline for the 2021 Difference is You Award recipient is this Friday, July 30 at 4 p.m.

The Indiana State Library's Professional Development Committee wants to recognize all of the wonderful library staff working in Indiana libraries. This year, the committee encourages everyone to think about a staff member who has taken change in stride and done great things - even through all of the obstacles of COVID-19 - and nominate them for the Difference is You Award. The award recognizes a library support staff worker who goes above and beyond for their community.

Nomination forms can be downloaded here in Word format and here in PDF format. The forms should be filled out and sent to Kara Cleveland, Professional Development Office supervisor at the Indiana State Library, before the deadline.

The annual The Difference is You conference is a training event for library support staff and paraprofessionals. The event also sees the presentation of The Difference is You Award.

"Taking Charge of Change" is the theme of the 2021 conference. The committee has announced that the conference will take place virtually on Friday, Sept. 17. Please check the conference website for schedule and registration details as they become available.

Indiana State Library’s new certification portal has launched

ISLLogo

The initial features of the Indiana State Library’s new librarian certification portal are now up and running. A one-page guide to using the portal can be downloaded here

As of July 1, the State Library no longer mails out hard copy paper certificates. Instead, certificates may be printed from the portal at any time once users set up an account within the portal. To access existing records, users must use the email address on file with the State Library from their most recent application for certification. The preferred email address can be changed at a later time.

To set up an account, select "Register for an Account" on the landing page. Fill in the four fields marked with an asterisk; middle name is optional. The system automatically generates a confirmation email. To set the password, use the "Recover Password" function here. During the password recovery process, use only a first and last name; no middle name or initials.

To print a certificate, log into the certification portal and select “Proof of Status.” The user's credential will appear. Click the download button to download the credential as a printable PDF.

A certification portal introductory email was sent to users by the Indiana State Library on July 27. This email was sent to the email address that the State Library has on file for each user. Those who did not receive the email should contact Cheri Harris from the email address they wish to have on record in order to request a copy of the introductory email.

Indiana Dunes

Now that summer is in full swing, many people are making the trip to Northwest Indiana to enjoy the beaches of Lake Michigan. One particularly popular lakefront destination is the Indiana Dunes State Park located in Chesterton in Porter County, 47 miles east of Chicago.

The Indiana Dunes State Park lies within the boundaries of the Indiana Dunes National Park - a unit of the National Park Service - and includes a beach, hiking trails, campgrounds, nature preserve, picnic area, nature center, sand dunes and a pavilion. Formerly known as the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the area encompassing the park was re-designated as the country's 61st national park on Feb. 15, 2019.

The undated picture featured above comes from the General Photograph Collection (P0) of the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division at the Indiana State Library and shows "A crowded day at the beach and pavilion at the Indiana Dunes State Park." The photograph is credited to the Indiana Department of Conservation.

Emergency Connectivity Fund filing window open until Aug. 13

ecf

The filing window for the federal Emergency Connectivity Fund is currently open until Aug. 13. The Emergency Connectivity Fund Program will reimburse schools and libraries for the reasonable costs of eligible equipment used to help students, staff and patrons who otherwise lack access to be able to engage in remote learning. Reimbursement includes up to 100% of the cost of laptops, tablets and hotspots; up to $400 for each laptop and tablet; and up to$250 for each hotspot purchased between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

Schools and libraries - including primary and secondary schools - that provided off-site broadband service and connected devices to students, staff and patrons who would otherwise lack access during the COVID-19 health emergency are eligible.

The fund will reimburse reasonable costs of eligible equipment such as Wi-Fi hotspots, modems, routers, devices that combine a modem and router, connected devices and eligible broadband connections.

Patrons who use these items will need to sign and return a statement saying that they would otherwise lack access to equipment or services sufficient to meet their educational needs if not for the use of the equipment or services being provided by the school or library.

To participate, schools and libraries must have an active FCC registration number. Schools, libraries and service providers who agree to invoice on behalf of applicants must also have a SAM.gov registration to be able to receive program support. Schools, libraries and service providers who are not registered with SAM.gov should act quickly, as there is a waiting period after registration. Click here to learn how to register with SAM.gov.

Click here to read more about the Emergency Connectivity Fund and to begin filing. The Emergency Connectivity Fund Program is administered by Universal Service Administrative Company with oversight from the Federal Communications Commission.
