On March 30, 2019, the Anderson Public Library and Project Fairy Godmother teamed up for the third year in a row to present the Project Fairy Godmother Prom Dress Giveaway. In order to help families cut down on the expenses associated with prom, the library seeks donations of dresses, shoes and accessories and then allows students to pick out items for the dance during the giveaway event. This year's event was held in the Chief Anderson Room at the main library.
During the giveaway, 53 students were able to find dresses and 20 students were able to find shoes and accessories. The dresses were professionally cleaned via donation from Bestway Cleaners, and Cookie McKinney, a retired professional seamstress, was on site to make alterations. Students only needed a high school ID to "check out" the items.
"The dresses do not have to be returned and teens from previous years have mentioned that they love being able to keep them because of the memories they now hold," said Ashtan Bennett, APL's program and marketing manager.
For those who weren't able to attend the giveaway, the library operated a pop-up shop for an additional seven days. Students were able to schedule an appointment and claim a dress, shoes or accessories.
The Collaborative Summer Library Program, the STAR Library Network’s "NASA@ My Library" initiative and NASA are working together to create a fun and engaging summer learning program for libraries across the nation. Libraries are invited to take advantage of "Summer of Space" 2019 summer learning resources and to register to gain access to a number of giveaways such as NASA tactile books, Scholastic books and even some Orion telescopes. Public libraries can officially register to participate in STAR Net’s "Summer of Space" campaign in collaboration with CSLP’s "A Universe of Stories" summer learning program.
The Indiana State Library is one of 14 state library agencies selected to receive resources, training and support through "NASA@ My Library," a STEM education initiative that will increase and enhance STEM learning opportunities for library patrons throughout the nation.
"NASA@ My Library" strives to engage diverse communities in STEM learning, including communities that are underrepresented in STEM fields. The educational support materials and outreach opportunities provided are part of the STAR Library Network, a hands-on learning program for libraries and their communities.

On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, the Tippecanoe County Public Library will migrate its data, including collection information, purchase requests, payment processes and more to a faster, more user-friendly software system, Polaris.
“All locations will remain open and maintain the same weekly schedules and operations,” said County Librarian Jos N. Holman. “After the transfer, customers will enjoy powerful new search options, unique account functions and the ability to create and save their own reading histories. No matter what types of devices you use, you will quickly notice the difference.”
“TCPL staff started researching library software providers in early 2017,” added Divisional Librarian Neal Starkey. “Our online catalog is still TIPCAT, but now it is powered by Polaris software.”
Polaris is compatible with a variety of web browsers. All searching can be done through a single workstation.
“The Polaris customers we talked to were very positive about the way data was handled during the migration and praised the quality of customer support they received afterwards," said Starkey.

The 2019 session of the Indiana General Assembly is drawing near completion as various session legislative deadlines have occurred. For legislation that makes its way through both chambers, the final stop is the governor’s office. The 2019 Bill Watch page will be updated as bills, also known as enrolled acts, make it to Gov. Holcomb’s desk. Clicking the bill number on the list will link back to the General Assembly website and all previous documents related to that bill. Enrolled acts signed by the speaker of the House and the president pro tempore of the Senate are sent to the office of the lieutenant governor for signature. They are then returned to the office of the secretary of the Senate for Senate enrolled acts or the clerk of the House of Representatives for House enrolled acts. Then they go to the office of the governor. From there, the governor reviews all legislation and has seven days to sign or veto the bill. If he does not sign it or veto it, it automatically becomes law on the eighth day after receipt. Enrolled acts will be assigned a public law number and are later printed in the Indiana Acts volumes.
During the current session, April 29 is the absolute last day for adjournment of both houses according to the Indiana Code. Sessions during odd-numbered years are commonly called “long sessions” because the legislature meets nearly six weeks longer than “short sessions” held in even-numbered years. Long sessions are also when state legislators pass the biennial state budget bill. For more information about the when and why of regular, technical and special sessions of the Indiana General Assembly, view the chapter of the Indiana Code called the Legislative Sessions and Procedures Law of 1971. Learn more about Indiana’s Constitutional requirements for how a bill becomes law.
