Dr. Jennifer McCormick

Dear Educators:

This week we celebrated Indiana's 201st birthday by welcoming more than 400 fourth graders from around the state. I enjoyed the opportunity to meet many of our special guests and explain a little about what we do at the Indiana Department of Education.

As we near the end of the first semester, I want to thank all of you for everything you do to help our students reach their full potential.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jennifer McCormick

State Superintendent of Public Instruction

Indiana Department of Education

Alternative Education

Teacher/Student Survey

Beginning this year, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) will no longer require alternative education teacher and student surveys. According to Indiana Code 20-30-8-15, the only collection requirement for qualifying school corporations to report is the number of full-time equivalent students who were enrolled in an alternative education program. These data are already collected and reported annually by schools within the required DOE-AL and FTE reports. If schools would like to have access to the previously used survey questions for use at the local level, please contact IDOE Alternative Education Specialist, Kimb Stewart, at kstewart@doe.in.gov.

FTE Report Final Submission

In an effort to streamline the FTE reporting process for schools, the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) will now accept scanned PDF documents via email in lieu of mailing or hand delivering the signed FTE report as stated in the original memo. All mailed, hand delivered, or scanned FTE reports with superintendent signatures, must be received by the IDOE no later than January 22, 2018. Documents may be emailed to the Alternative Education Specialist, Kimb Stewart, at kstewart@doe.in.gov, or mailed to the Indiana Department of Education, C/O Kimb Stewart, at 115 W. Washington Street, South Tower Suite 600, Indianapolis, IN 46204. If you have additional questions, please contact Melissa Blossom mblossom@doe.in.gov.

Assessment

Winter Retest ISTEP+ Grade 10 Deadline for Returning Test Materials

As communicated to Corporation Test Coordinators (CTCs), any paper test documents must be shipped to Pearson for scoring by Monday, December 18 in order to be included in Phase 1 reporting. Any test documents shipped after this date through Tuesday, December 26 will be scored, but will be at risk for delayed processing and reporting. CTCs should contact UPS at least 48 hours prior to the anticipated pickup date to schedule pickup of test materials. Any student test documents found after December 26 must be immediately returned to Pearson. These student responses will not be scored.

NEW! ILEARN Construction has Begun

In this Assessment Overview, Dr. Charity Flores shares highlights of the new ILEARN assessment system, including improvements to test content and reporting, changes made based on lessons learned from current programs, and a plan for reducing the burden for schools. Indiana educators are involved in every step of ILEARN construction. This flyer explains the major steps of ILEARN’s development and also highlights forthcoming positive changes.

NEW! Report any Students with Hearing Impairments by December 22

Please use this form to identify any students in your school participating in the Spring 2018 IREAD-3 assessment and have hearing impairments preventing them from receiving phonics instruction. Pearson will use this information to set up online practice, operational test sessions, and generate any required paper test materials. CTCs must provide this information to IDOE by 4:00 p.m. ET on Friday, December 22. Response is not needed from schools with no students to report. Please contact our office with any questions INassessments@doe.in.gov.
