Welcome to Carmel!
The Carmel Street Department has installed 28 new “Welcome to Carmel” signs throughout the city. This was a fiscally responsible approach that prioritized long-term value, efficiency and city-wide consistency over a more limited and costlier alternative.
Of the 28 original “Welcome to Carmel” signs, 11 have gone missing over time due to road construction. The remaining 17 wooden signs had deteriorated from weather exposure. Replacing only the 11 missing signs with the original wooden design was estimated to cost more than $52,000. Instead, the City chose to replace all 28 signs with a new aluminum design for roughly $32,000, resulting in cost savings of $20,000.
The new aluminum signs are more durable, offer longer-lasting performance than the original wooden versions and include a separate section that can be adjusted to highlight special events and messages. The newly-installed signs say "SwimCity, USA" in honor of our national champion swimmers and to prepare for the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup, taking place in Carmel in October.
