Ordinance Saves Taxpayers $3.5 Million
The Lake County Board unanimously approved an ordinance providing for the payment of outstanding bonds that will result in $3.5 million in savings for taxpayers who own property within Special Area 16 (SSA 16).
In 2013, Lake County and the Villages of Lake Villa and Lindenhurst joined together to bring Lake Michigan water to the Lake Villa, Lindenhurst, Fox Lake Hills and Grandwood Park water systems. To finance the improvements that were estimated to cost up to $46 million, SSA 16 was created to establish bonds. Project costs ended up being $3.5 million lower than the $46 million estimate, allowing for one of the bonds to be redeemed in full 15 years early. Through this action by the County Board, the SSA 16 tax levy for those who own property within this area will be reduced. Learn more
Community Meeting on Upcoming Lake Michigan Water Project
Lake County Public Works (LCPW) is hosting a community meeting to introduce a project that will connect Lake Michigan water to the Pekara and Horatio Gardens neighborhoods in south central Lake County.
These neighborhoods currently receive water from multiple wells that are not sustainable long-term and would be costly to upgrade. Through the allocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds, LCPW is working to bring Lake Michigan Water to this area to provide a high-quality water source to the community for the years to come.

Oak Terrace Well House and System Interconnection
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2024 on a new well house on the West Oak Middle School property. The well house will serve the school and the Oak Terrace water system in the nearby neighborhood. This is the final phase of a project that began with drilling a test well and installing new water main pipes. With this project, the recently installed mains will become operational, and LCPW will work with water system residents to install water meters. Learn more
Highland Lake Water System Improvement Project
Work has begun to interconnect the Highland Lake water system serving the west side of the lake with the private system serving the east side of the lake. Disinfection equipment is currently being installed in the existing well house on Gerwal Avenue to ensure all water meets Illinois EPA standards. This treatment is critically important because it eliminates bacteria sometimes found in well water. Learn more
Saunders Road Improvements
Construction is underway on a large project along Saunders Road in the Riverwoods area. Approximately 8,000 feet of force main pipes will be installed along Saunders Road over the next year.
