Shoreline Restoration in Chesapeake Landing, Grayslake

The Grayslake Community Park District, in partnership with the Lake County Stormwater Management Commission (SMC), and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA), is restoring the shoreline of Chesapeake Landing Pond 2 this spring. The pond, which was constructed in the early 1990s, is located in the Chesapeake Farms subdivision in Grayslake. The network of stormwater ponds in Chesapeake Landing, a 7 acre park in Chesapeake Farms, serve as the headwaters for a branch of Mill Creek and therefore play an important role in water quality downstream. Like many detention ponds in our area, the shorelines of Chesapeake Landing Pond 2 are vegetated with turfgrass and have experienced erosion since the pond went into operation. This project will remedy erosion and install a buffer of native vegetation around the shoreline to help reduce nonpoint source pollution downstream in Mill Creek. The project was recommended in the Mill Creek Watershed-Based Plan and is funded, in part, by the Illinois EPA through Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.

Recommendations for Improving Buffalo Creek and Loch Lomond Identified in Report

The Small Watershed Assessment and Action Plan (SWAAP) project report assessed current conditions for two locations within the Des Plaines River Watershed, Loch Lomond in Mundelein and Buffalo Creek in Long Grove. The assessments recommend specific watershed protection and restoration projects that can be used to improve existing water quality within the community. The recommendations provided in the SWAPP include conceptual project designs, cost estimates, and projected water quality improvement benefits. Stakeholders can use the information to implement or secure future funding for a future project in Buffalo Creek or Loch Lomond.

North Branch Chicago River Watershed Workgroup

NBWW

Earlier this year, SMC aided in the establishment of the North Branch Chicago River Watershed Workgroup (NBWW). As the administrative agent for the NBWW, the Stormwater
Management Commission (SMC) will provide support to the workgroup in its efforts to develop a monitoring program and strategies to improve water quality throughout the watershed. Visit the website for more information.
